Lumberjacks Outshoot Western Oregon 11-9, But Fall 1-0

MONMOUTH, Ore.---  Even though the Humboldt State Lumberjacks outshot the Western Oregon Wolves 11-9 this afternoon in a non-conference match-up in Oregon, the Wolves snapped the Lumberjacks' unbeaten streak at three with a 1-0 victory.  The Wolves scored in the 12th minute on a goal by Jada Foster off a rebound off a missed shot.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "We didn't come out and compete right away that hurt us when Western Oregon capitalized on a turnover," said head coach Grant Landy.  "The second part of the first half was much better.  We started piecing things together, switching the point of attack and creating chances."

"The second half was as struggle," added Landy.  "We were finding it hard to keep possession and keep the ball in our half of the field.  All in all, it was a good weekend where we continue to have moments where you can see the potential of this team. And other moments where we still have a lot of work to do.  We are back on the road to another challenge next weekend and I know the team will be ready to compete."

FIRST HALF:  Western Oregon (1-3) had a chance. to take the lead in the 12th minute when Alexis Aguilar recorded the first of her four saves on the day.  Jade Foster connected on the rebound of Piper Matson's missed shot off a ball from Chloe Smith to give WOU the early 1-0 lead.  The Lumberjacks had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 when Darien Walton stopped Rhea Chan's shot in the 15th minute.  Late in the half, Baylee Groom's shot to tie the match went wide as the hosts took the 1-0 lead into the half.

SECOND HALF:  The visitors had two chances early in the second half but Walton stopped Kendal Spencer and Groom's attempt to keep the score, 1-0, Western Oregon.  With 15 minutes left in the match, Clara Lenihan's shot sailed wide for the Lumberjacks.  The 'Jacks had one more chance in the final minutes but Julia Humphrey's shot went high over the net as WOU held on for the 1-0 victory.

UNBEATEN STREAK SNAPPED:  Humboldt State (2-1-1) had its unbeaten streak snapped at three this afternoon in Oregon.  The last time that HSU had a streak of that long was in 2018 from October 20-22.

GOALIES:  Alexis Aguilar and Darien Walton each had four saves in goal for their respective teams.

NEXT UP: The Lumberjacks will return to the pitch as they continue their road trip with a pair of matches in the Bay Area. HSU will face Menlo College on Thurs., Sept. 16 for a 1pm non-conference match-up in Atherton.  The 'Jacks will finish out their four-match road trip in Hayward, Calif., for another non-conference match-up with Holy Names University at 4:30pm.  The match will take place on the campus of Cal State East Bay in Pioneer Stadium.
