ATHERTON, Calif.--- An offsides call against Humboldt State with two minutes cancelled what looked like the game-tying goal by
Kelsey Bess as the hosts, Menlo College Oaks, held on for the 1-0 victory in Atherton, Calif. Menlo (4-0-1) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the seventh minute as Angelica Soto connected on a ball from Kori Ann Koverman.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH: "We did a lot of things right today so I am disappointed that we didn't get a positive result," said head coach
Grant Landy. "Our energy and ball movement were excellent, we just struggled to find that execution in the final third of the field. We certainly had our chances so we need to convert those do arise."
"I liked that we kept pressing to get the equalizer late, and got a bit unlucky with a goal called back, but the mentality was good," added Landy. "Menlo did a good job defending and put one away so sometimes that can be the difference in a tight game like this."
FIRST HALF: Humboldt State (2-2-1) had a chance to take the early lead in the second minute, but
Maya Davis shot on goal was stopped by the Oaks' Michelle Gonzalez. Five minutes later, Menlo College took the lead as Angelica Soto connected on a ball from Kori-Ann Koverman. The 'Jacks had a chance to tie match at 1-1 in the 37
th minute when
Emilie Wallin's shot on goal was stopped by the Oaks' keeper.
Alexis Aguilar recorded one of her three saves on the day when she stopped Dania Shabat's chance to double the hosts' lead in the 37
th minute. HSU had another chance to tie match in the 37
th minute when Wallin's shot was stopped by Gonzalez. Right after that,
Poppy Cartledge's shot attempt sailed wide as Menlo took a 1-0 lead into the half.
SECOND HALF: It looked like the 'Jacks were going to tie the match in the 50
th as
Clara Lenihan's shot went wide of the net off a corner kick by
Mia Castaneda. Wallin saw her second chance to tie the game be stopped by Gonzalez in the 54
th minute. With two minutes left in the match, it looked like
Kelsey Bess scored the game-tying goal for HSU but the 'Jacks were called offsides as Menlo held on for the 1-0 victory.
AGUILAR: Alexis Aguilar recorded three saves in goal for the 'Jacks as she faced 11 shots this afternoon. Michelle Gonzalez had three saves in goal for the Oaks as she faced eight shot attempts.
WALLIN: Emilie Wallin recorded two of the Lumberjacks' shots on goal while
Maya Davis had HSU's other shot on goal. Humboldt State recorded five other shot attempts one each by
Kendal Spencer,
Maya Davis,
Baylee Groom and
Emma McChristie.
ROAD TRIP COMING TO AN END: Humboldt State will conclude their four-match road trip this Saturday afternoon in Hayward, Calif., for a 4:30pm non-conference match with Holy Names. HSU will begin a three-match home stand on Saturday, September 25 at 3pm when the 'Jacks host Chico State in a non-conference match at College Creek Field.
