HAYWARD, Calif.--- Humboldt State Lumberjacks' women's soccer team finished their season long four-match road trip with a 3-0 win over the Holy Names University Hawks at Pioneer Stadium on the campus of Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
Mia Castaneda scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 55 seconds into the match on unassisted goal. She later assisted on the Lumberjacks' third goal by
Clara Lenihan in the 60
th minute.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "This was a challenging game to break down their low block," said head coach
Grant Landy. "We made some good adjustments in the second half and started letting the ball do the work. "It was a good game for us to have to think intelligently about our play. It will be nice to be home for a while now after a long road trip. We learned a lot about ourselves and hope we continue to progress in the coming weeks."
FIRST HALF: Just 55 seconds into the match,
Mia Castaneda gave the Lumberjacks the 1-0 lead when she connected on unassisted goal. HSU had two chances in the 19
th minute to double its lead but
Baylee Groom and
Poppy Cartledge each had their shot on goals stopped by the Hawks' Nyah Summers.
Alexis Aguilar made the first of three saves on the day in the 29
th minute when she stopped Kylie Tisdale's shot from tying the match for Holy Names (0-5).
The 'Jacks doubled their lead in the 32
nd minute when
Brooke Weese scored on a ball from
Kelsey Bess and
Erin Mohr. Humboldt State (3-2-1) had another chance to increase its lead, but in the 38
th minute
Maya Davis had her shot on goal attempt stopped by Summers to send the match into the half with an HSU 3-0 lead.
SECOND HALF: Humboldt State increased its lead to 3-0 in the 60
th minute as
Clara Lenihan scored off a ball from Castaneda. Holy Names had a chance to cut into the 'Jack lead, but Aguilar stopped Jocelyn Reyes' shot on goal attempt in the 64
th minute. The 'Jacks had two chances in the 75
th minute to take a 4-0 lead, but Summers stopped both Weese's shot on goal attempt and one by
Sarah Paquette. Aguilar made her third save in the match when she stopped Paola Barron's shot attempt in the 76
th minute. HSU had one more chance for its fourth goal of the match, but
Niki Clark's shot sailed left of the net in the 85
th minute as the 'Jacks took the 3-0 victory.
FIRST: Mia Castaneda scored her first goal of the season and also had her first assist. Her goal 55 seconds into the match was also her first game-winning goal of the season.
DEFENSE: The Lumberjacks' defense has allowed 0.64 goals a game in their first six games of the season.
Alexis Aguilar has led the way with her 0.49 goals against average with 20 saves and two shutouts.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will begin a three-match homestand a week from today when the 'Jacks host Chico State at 3pm at College Creek Field in a rare non-conference match-up.
