ARCATA, Calif--- Humboldt State's men's soccer team improved to 5-0 with its 1-0 win over the visiting Simpson Redhawks (1-3) in the Lumberjacks' home opener. This was the Lumberjacks' fifth straight shutout, which is the first time since 1989 that this has happened in program history.
FIRST HALF:
Devin Hauenstein had HSU's first chance for a goal be stopped by the Simpson defense in the third minute. Simpson had a chance for the lead, but Joseph Bell's shot was blocked by the 'Jacks defense. HSU had another chance to take the lead in the 26th minute but Daniel Morales stopped
Marco Silveira's shot on goal attempt. With six minutes left in the half,
Nicolas Herrera Land's shot was stopped by the RedHawks' keeper. Then two minutes later,
Marcus Abdel-Malek saw his chance for a goal be stopped by Morales as the match went into the half tied at 0-0.
SECOND HALF: In just the third minute of the second half,
Alejandro Lopez had two chances to give the 'Jacks the lead but one sailed wide right and the other was saved by the Simpson keeper. HSU had another chance in the 68th minute when
Nicolas Herrera Land's shot on goal attempt was stopped by the visitors' keeper but Silveira connected on the rebound to give HSU the 1-0 lead.
Ramiro Rosas is the Lumberjack that passed the ball to Herrera Land to lead to the goal. The Lumberjacks had several chances to double their lead including one by
Cole Falco in the 82nd minute and the final two by
Motoki Sato and Silveira but all three were stopped by Simpson's defense as HSU took the 1-0 victory.
FIFTH STRAIGHT SHUTOUT: HSU's defense recorded its fifth straight shutout for the first time since 1989. The 'Jacks allowed just three shot attempts on the afternoon. The defense was led by
Jacob Cotton,
Christian Gonzalez,
Sean Tucker,
Cole Falco and
Solomon Baxter.
SECOND GAME-WINNER:
Marco Silveira recorded his fourth goal of the season and second game-winner. He has scored four goals with six assists for 17 points.
FIRST ONE: Ramiro Rosas recorded his first assist of the season while
Nicolas Herrera Land has his third.
