ARCATA, Calif--- The No. 13 Humboldt State Lumberjacks improved to 6-0 with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Chico State Wildcats (1-15) this afternoon at College Creek Field.
Marco Silveira scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 56
th minute off a cross from
Marcus Abdel-Malek after a through ball from
Dylan Tovani. This was Silveira's team leading fifth goal of the season.
Adrian Gallardo recorded three saves en route to his fifth shutout of the season.
FIRST HALF: Nico Herrera Land had a chance to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute, but his shot went wide of the net. Seven minutes later, Luis Albarran recorded his first of five saves on the day, when he stopped
Marco Silveira's shot on goal attempt. Chico State had a chance to take the lead in the 41
st minute when Noah Ross' shot sailed wide left as the match went into the half scoreless.
SECOND HALF: Chico State looked like it was going to take the 1-0 lead in the 55
th minute, but
Adrian Gallardo made his first of three saves on the day. One minute later, Humboldt State took the 1-0 lead when
Marco Silveira connected on a cross from
Marcus Abdel-Malek off a through ball from
Dylan Tovani. Chico State had a chance to tie the match in the 63
rd minute when Adrian Fontanelli's shot was stopped by Gallardo. In the 69
th minute, Gallardo made another stop of Fontanelli's shot on goal attempt. HSU had a chance to double its lead in the 75
th minute when
Hawk Baxter's shot sailed wide left. Juan Perez had a chance to tie the match at 1-1 for the visitors but his shot attempt sailed over the crossbar as the 'Jacks held on for the 1-0 win.
SIX STRAIGHT: Humboldt State for the first time in school history has opened up its season with six straight shutouts.
Adrian Gallardo has five of those six shutouts while
Jacob Cotton has one.
GAME-WINNER: Marco Silveira recorded his team leading third game-winning goal this afternoon.
Alex Lopez has recorded two and
Dylan Tovani has one on the season.
