Humboldt State Returns to Lumberjack Arena to Host CSUSB and Cal Poly Pomona

Alonzo Washington and his Lumberjack Teammates Will host the 'Yotes and Broncos this weekend
ARCATA, Calif---  Humboldt State men's basketball team will return to Lumberjack Arena after being off since January 2 when the 'Jacks defeated Sonoma State 84-60.  HSU will be home this weekend for a pair of conference games in Lumberjack Arena.  HSU will entertain No. 6 Cal State San Bernardino (Thursday, January 13) and Cal Poly Pomona (Saturday, January 15). Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30pm.
 
COACHING STAFF:  The 'Jacks are coached by second-year head coach Tae Norwood.  Coach Norwood has a .686 winning percentage during his three years as a head coach. Norwood led the 'Jacks to a 4-5 record during the pandemic season.  He came to Humboldt State from Florida, where he guided Keiser University to a 23-7 record during the 2019-20 season including a share of the conference regular season title.  Keiser also appeared in the NAIA Tournament. 
 
On his staff are Andy Harre (first year), HSU Alum and former men's basketball player Colin Caslick (third season) along with volunteers Jason Hodges and Baron Parks. 

RECAP OF THE LUMBERJACKS' LAST GAME:  The 'Jacks started their game with Sonoma State on a 15-0 run and cruised to an 84-60 victory over the Seawolves in Lumberjack Arena.  Five players scored in double digits for the 'Jacks paced by Jaden Edwards' game high 22 points.  Cam Timmons recorded his first double-double with 18 points and a career high 10 rebounds.  Amari Green chipped in 15 points and added seven assists while Austin Harris added 11 points.  HSU shot 51.5% from the field while the Seawolves were held to just 33.9% shooting. 
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State is 8-4 overall and 2-4 in the CCAA after defeating Sonoma State 84-60 this past Sunday.  The 'Jacks are averaging 72.3 points per game while giving up 69.6 points per game.  They are out-rebounding their opponents 38.6 to 33.6.  Jaden Edwards leads the way with his 17.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game averages.  Cam Timmons is shooting a team leading 54.9% from the field and is tied with Bryce Mitchell for the team lead with nine blocked shots. Will Johnson has dished out a team high 39 assists and recording a team leading 18 steals.  Amari Green leads the team with his 37.9% shooting from three-point land while Thomas Melonja has made a team high 19 three-point field goals.  Green leads the team with his 81.8% shooting from the line.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: In his first season as a 'Jack, Jaden Edwards has recorded six double-doubles this season. Edwards' first two came in HSU's first two games versus Western Washington (16 points/14 rebounds) and Simon Fraser (15 points/10 rebounds).  On Dec. 2 and Dec. 4, Edwards had an 11 points/11 rebound performance against SF State and a 19 points/12 rebounds effort against CSU Monterey Bay. Edwards' fourth double-double came on December 9 against Simpson in which he scored 41 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  He then scored 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds at Stanislaus State (Dec. 11).  Cam Timmons recorded his first double-double on January 2 with an 18-point, 10-rebound performance against Sonoma State. 
 
CCAA/NCAA RANKINGS: In this past week's CCAA Statistics, the 'Jacks are second in rebounding margin and fourth in blocked shots. They are also fifth in scoring margin, scoring defense and field goal percentage defense while being sixth in field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage defense, free throw percentage and steals.  Jaden Edwards is second in rebounding average, third in scoring and seventh in field goal percentage.  Cam Timmons and Bryce Mitchell are tied for fifth in blocked shots. Edwards is also in the top 35 in the nation in double-doubles (17th), rebounding ( 18th) and total rebounds (31st).
 
6-0 NON-CONFERENCE (4-0 AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE NCAA DII WEST REGION FOES):  Four of HSU's six non-conference games were all NCAA Division II West Region games.  HSU started the season with two important wins over Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Western Washington (70-69) and Simon Fraser (63-59) in Carson, California.  The 'Jacks also defeated Western Oregon, 75-67, from the GNAC and Dominican, 74-68, from the PacWest Conference.  HSU's other non-conference victories were an 81-78 over Lincoln and an 85-68 win over Simpson.  The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
 
NO. 6 CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO: Coming into this weekend, Cal State San Bernardino is 11-1 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA.  The Coyotes are averaging 89.8 points per game while giving up 74.9 points per game. They are out-rebounding their opponents 44.2 to 34.0.  Brandon Knapper leads the way with his 22.0 scoring average, 43 three's made and 79.6% shooting from the line.  Dayton Jenkins is next with his 15.8 scoring and 9.9 rebounding average followed by Eddie Davis at 14.0 points per game and his team leading 50% shooting from three's.  Darius Mickens is averaging 11.8 points per game while shooting 63.8% from the field and recorded a team leading 20 steals.  Darius Lubom has dished out a team high 60 assists. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. CSUSB):  Cal State San Bernardino leads the all-time series with the 'Jacks 15-13 including winning four of the last five games.  CSUSB won 94-72 in Arcata on February 8, 2020 with Amari Green scoring 12 points. HSU's last win over the 'Yotes was 53-49 on February 16, 2019 in Arcata.  
 
CAL POLY POMONA:  Heading into their game this Thursday at home at Sonoma State, the Broncos  are 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA.  They are averaging 68.8 points per game while giving up 63.3 points per game while out-rebounding their opponents 38.6 to 35.9.  Phoenix Shackelford leads the way with his 17.9 scoring average, 15 three's, 30 assists and 19 steals.  Christopher Mitchell is next at 13.1 points per game followed by Dane Erikstrap with his 10.2 scoring average, 94.1% shooting from the line and eight blocked shots.  Tavian Henderson leads CPP with his 7.8 rebounding average and 54.5% shooting from the field while Caleb Nelson is shooting a team leading 41.7% from the three-point line.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. CAL POLY POMONA):  Cal Poly Pomona leads the all-time series with HSU 19-11 including winning the last four games in a row.  HSU lost 81-67 in Arcata on February 6, 2020 and 96-64 in Pomona on December 5, 2019.  The last HSU win was on December 31, 2018, in Pomona a 70-65 'Jack win.  HSU last won 71-60 in Arcata on February 11, 2017 as current assistant coach Colin Caslick scored eight points.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA:  Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena.  The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships.  March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5.  The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
