CHICO, Calif. -- On Sunday, the Lumberjacks headed to Chico State for the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Conference Tournament. Humboldt entered the tournament as a number five seed after their 1-0 victory last Thursday at home over Chico State. Chico State was seeded right above the Jacks as a number four seed. The season series was tied at a match a piece, with Chico State being victorious the first time they met in September (1-0) and Humboldt taking revenge in last Thursday's match (1-0).
After 90 minutes of regulation time was played on Sunday afternoon, the Jacks found themselves even with Chico State and headed to overtime with a 1-1 tie. In the fifth minute of overtime, Chico's Brynn Howard took a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that snuck inside the right post. This proved to be the match winner as the Jacks were held off in the remaining time by Chico's back line.
"It was a hard fought battle today against two good teams fighting to extend their season," said Head Coach
Grant Landy. "Chico is always tough to play on their home field but I thought we battled hard."
The Lumberjacks held even with Chico after the first 45 minutes and entered the half tied 0-0 despite 13 total shots between the two teams.
Hannah Pieri gave Chico State the lead in the 60th minute on a ball that was assisted by Mackenzie Gill and Natalie Mendoza. The Lumberjacks responded quickly with an equalizer goal in the 64th minute by
Jysabella Tolentino. She was assisted by
Grace Johnson.
"I was really proud of how we responded to get the equalizing goal in the second half," stated Head Coach Grant landy. "This team has been resilient all year and their work rate and belief was tremendous today."
Goalkeeper
Carson Thomson-Terrel had a busy afternoon, recording a season-high eight saves in net for the Jacks.
Maddie Johnson,
Erin Mohr,
Maya Davis, and
Camryn Patten all added shots to go along with
Jysabella Tolentino's three shots, one of which was a goal.
Humboldt accomplished a great deal this season as they remained undefeated at home and made the conference tournament for the first time in 16 years.
Head Coach
Grant Landy said after the match, "It's definitely hard to say good bye to this team. They did everything that I asked them to do this season. I couldn't be prouder of how they competed and came together as a team. Our seniors provided great leadership and can be so proud of the legacy that they are leaving behind. The future is bright for this program, we took a major step forward this year as a team."
