ARCATA, Calif.--- A goal with less than ten minutes remaining by Cal State Los Angeles' Thaiz Hernandez equalized what looked to be a sure Humboldt victory, as the Jacks were forced to take a 1-1 tie instead on Friday afternoon at College Creek Field. Kylea Becker scored her first goal in the Green & Gold to give the Lumberjacks the early lead while Grace Johnson, Erin Mohr, and Maya Davis also had shot attempts for the Jacks. Goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel had three saves.
FIRST HALF: The Golden Eagles had chances early to score, including a penalty kick in the fifth minute by Shelby Melin that was saved by Thomson-Terrel. Grace Johnson's shot attempt at 9:45 was subsequently saved by LA goalkeeper Areli Reyes. The first breakthrough wouldn't come until the 28th minute, when Julia Humphreys sailed a ball to Kylea Becker to score the first goal of the match, giving the Jacks a 1-0 lead.
SECOND HALF: The Jacks were able to limit the Golden Eagles to just four shot attempts in the second half, down from eight in the first period. That was all they needed, as Hernandez got a ball in the box and scored with just over 10 minutes remaining to even the score at one.
UP NEXT: The Jacks remain home for a match with fellow polytechnic Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday at 2pm.
