ARCATA, Calif.----Both of the Cal Poly Humboldt men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will begin their 2022 season this Saturday, February 12 when the 'Jacks host the Annual Green and Gold. There are 70 plus entries in this year's Green & Gold from Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods.
UPDATED: Now Open to the public! To enter a race, check in at the tent in the center of the Redwood Bowl. All entries will be required to present one of the following: a Humbodlt staff or student ID, Proof of full vaccination, or proof of a negative Covid test in the past 72 hours.
This will be the first of two home meets with the other one being on March 26. The second home meet will be the Humboldt Invitational on March 26.
The 'Jacks will have 47 student-athletes competing in this year's Green and Gold in the 36 events. Humboldt will have a Green team and a Gold team while the College of Redwoods will also be competing.
"For the green and gold open, Humboldt will divide its rosters in half for an intra-squad scrimmage," said head coach
Sarah Ingram. "This meet is a chance for our program to dust off the cobwebs and get into the competitive mindset, while also providing a fun atmosphere and reconnecting with our former lumberjack teammates who will be visiting.
Some of the running events on this year's Green & Gold schedule will feature abbreviated race distances, similar to what indoor programs would be running this time of the year, such as the 60 meter high hurdles and the 1200 meter run. Among the events there will be the 4x400m Lumberjack log relay.
Lumberjack athletes to watch for include returning women
Rosa Granados in the 1200 and 3200,
Kayla Penny in the 600 and 1200,
Joy Hano in the 100 hurdles, 150, and long jump, and
Grace Kasberger in the 100 hurdles, high jump, and long jump. Newcomers
Kaela Dennert-Frederick and
Delaena Montes will represent in the throwing events in hammer and shot put, and in discus and shot put respectively.
On the men's side,
Aris Valerio and
Julian Jensen will look to impress in the 600 and 1200, and
Carson Smith,
Sebastian Vaisset-Fauvel and
Ricardo Torres will double in the 1200 and 3200. Returning seniors
Jared Del Real,
Kegan Richards, and
Nolan Smith will lead us in the throws in shot, discus, and hammer. Decathlete
Travis Allen will be brushing up on his high jump, pole vault, and 60 hurdles in preparation for his opening decathlon in a couple weeks. The Arthur brothers, made up of senior Malachi and freshman Isaac, should have a strong showing in the 300-meter race, and newcomer
Slade Cavallaro will debut in the 400 hurdles.
Field events begin at 9am on Saturday, February 12, and running events kick off at 12:30pm. Prior to the Green and Gold running events starting, the 'Jacks will have a presentation on Dam Worth It, a student-run organization aimed at spreading mental health awareness and reducing the stigma.
