COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks scored four of their eight runs in the third inning to key their 8-4 night cap win over the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions. The 'Jacks lost the opener 13-5 in six innings.
Gaige Garcia picked up the win in game two.
Micaela Harris went a combined five-for-eight with three runs scored and three runs batted in including a three-run home run.
Izzy Starr had a three-run home run also for the 'Jacks in the night cap. Also hitting home runs for Humboldt were
Tessa Poirier and
Katelyn Dendas.
GAME ONE: The Mountain Lions took a 5-0 lead in their first at bat in the opener. Humboldt cut the UCCS lead to 5-2 on a two-run home run by
Tessa Poirier in the Lumberjacks' half of the second inning. University of Colorado-Colorado Springs increased its lead to 7-2 on a two-run home run by Peyton Reisman in the bottom of the third inning.
Once again, the 'Jacks came back and cut the Mountain Lead to 7-5 on a three-run home run by
Micaela Harris in their half of the fourth inning. UCCS (1-1) had a five-run fourth keyed by a Paige White three-run home run to increase the hosts' lead to 12-5. They added an insurance run in the sixth to take the game 13-5 after six innings.
The Mountain Lions had 17 hits in the opener led by Sawyer Brewster's four-for-four day, driving in a run and scoring twice. Braelyne Crenshaw picked up the win pitching 5.1 innings, giving up six hits and five runs while striking out six and walking four.
Harris had three of the 'Jacks seven hits while driving in three runs and scoring a run.
Megan Escobar suffered the loss for the 'Jacks falling to 0-1.
GAME TWO: UCCS took a 1-0 lead in the nightcap in the bottom of the first inning. The Mountain Lions doubled their lead on a Briana Mattos' two-out triple that scored Morgan Hernandez-Belew.
The 'Jacks took their first lead of the day with a four-run third inning. Harris had a one-out triple and then
Alyssa Ramirez walked. Starr gave Humboldt a 3-2 lead with a three-run home run. Humboldt added another run on a solo home run by
Katelyn Dendas to give Humboldt a 4-2 lead.
The hosts cut the deficit in half on a two-out run scoring double by Mia Perez, 4-3. Humboldt made it 5-2 in its half in the fourth. Harris had a one-out single and stole second and on the throw she scored on a two-base throwing error by the visitors. This was Harris' fifth steal of the season and 34
th in a row dating back to her sophomore season in 2020.
Cal Poly Humboldt (2-2) added another run in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. With two outs,
JoAna Mullins drove in Poirier with an infield single. The Mountain Lions cut the 'Jack lead to 6-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
The 'Jacks added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Alyssa Ramirez had a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch. She advanced to third on a single by Starr.
Emily McAdams pinch ran for Starr. Ramirez scored on a sacrifice fly by Dendas. McAdams scored on a two-out single by
Vanessa Saltos to increase the 'Jack lead to 8-4.
The Mountain Lions didn't score in the sixth or seventh as
Gaige Garcia (2-0) picked up the complete game victory. She gave up five hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out six and walking four. Starr finished the night cap with three hits and driving in three runs and scoring once. Harris had three two hits, scored twice and had a stolen base.
Humboldt will conclude its trip in Colorado on Saturday, February 5 with a noon (MT) starting doubleheader in Denver, Colo., with Regis University. The 'Jacks trip to Colorado will finish on Sunday, February 6 with an 11am (MT) starting doubleheader with MSU-Denver in Denver.
