DEXTER, Ore..--- The seventh ranked Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks traveled to Dexter, Ore., to participate in the Covered Bridge Regatta at Dexter Lake. The Jacks captured the varsity fours and varsity eights while the novice fours finished in second and third.
"We had a good day on the race course," said head coach Matt Weise. "The first races were in calm waters. The rain started and the wind came up in the second and the cross-head winds made for quite a challenge for all the crews. The V4 and V8 won both of their races and handled the conditions well. They increased their margin of victory from the morning race. The novice four also improved during their second race and changed position from third to second place. We had good progressions from the morning to the afternoon races."
The women's varsity eight won their race with a respective time of 7:06.9, seven seconds ahead of UC Davis who placed second with a time of 7:13.9. Humboldt women's varsity eight had a first-place time of 7:22.9, twelve seconds ahead of UC Davis' 7:34.2.
The women's varsity four posted a win in their first race, finishing in 8:14.2, just over a second faster than U of Oregon who crossed the line in 8:15.3, and Sonoma State in 9:21.8. In challenging conditions for their second race, the varsity four outpaced their competition, crossing the line in 09:36.3, over 6 seconds faster than U of Oregon (09:42.7) and well ahead of Chico State (9:46.4), Pacific U (10:22.3) and Sonoma State (11:43.4).
The Jacks' novice four in the morning placed third with a time of 8:44.7 behind Washington State (8:06.4) and UC Davis (8:36.6), ahead of Southern Oregon U (9:04.7), U of Oregon (9:28.6) and UNLV (11:11.9). In the afternoon novice four race, the Jacks finished in second with a time of 9:13.7 behind Washington State's 8:28.1, and ahead of Southern Oregon U (9:42.5) and UNLV (12:38.9)
Cal Poly Humboldt will return to the water at the end of the month, April 30-May 1 in Sacramento, Calif., when the Jacks compete in the WIRA Championships.
