Both of the Jacks’ Rallies Fall Short at SF State

SAN FRANCSICO, Calif.--- The visiting Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks' saw both of the late inning rallies fall short in both ends of their doubleheader at San Francisco State this afternoon.  The Jacks lost the opener 7-5 and in the night cap, Humboldt fell 6-4. 
 
GAME ONE:  San Francisco State took a 2-0 lead in its half of the first inning.  Brynlynn Vallejos had a lead-off single and scored on a double by Lehua DeLeon.  With one out, DeLeon scored on a double to right center by Teya Vincent.
 
Cal Poly Humboldt tied the game with a two-run second inning.  Megan Escobar had a lead-off single and went to second when Anna Brondos reached on a fielder's choice.  Hollee Travao had a bunt single to load the bases.  With one out, Micaela Harris walked to once again load the bases.  JoAna Mullins drove in Escobar on a single which Travao also scored when the Gators misplayed the single. 
 
San Francisco State (19-28, 10-20 CCAA) doubled its lead on a two-run one-out single by Marley Gonzales in the bottom of the third inning, 6-2.
 
Humboldt cut the Gator lead in half, 6-4, with on a two-run home run by Vanessa SaltosKatelyn Dendas had a lead-off single and scored on Saltos' team and conference leading tenth home run of the season.
 
The Gators added an insurance run in the fifth on a solo home run by Gonzales in bottom of the fifth, 7-4.
 
Humboldt cut its deficit to 7-5 with a run in the top of the sixth.  Travao had a lead-off single and went to second on a ground out by Harris.  She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Mullins. 
 
With two outs in the Jacks' half of the seventh, Brondos had a single but was stranded at first as the Gators induced the last Jack batter to fly out to right field to preserve the 7-5 victory.
 
JACK STARS: Vanessa Saltos hit her team leading tenth home run of the season. She finished the game two-for-four with two runs batted in and a run scored.  JoAna Mullins had two hits and two runs batted in while Hollee Travao went three-for-four with two runs scored.  Katelyn Dendas had two hits for the Jacks.  Megan Holt pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, while giving up one hit, striking out one and walking two.
 
GAME TWO: The Gators took a 1-0 lead in their half of the first inning.  Brynlynn Vallejos had a lead-off walk.  She scored after stealing second and third while scoring on an errant throw. 
 
SF State increased its lead to 4-0 with a three-run third inning.  Cal Poly Humboldt (13-34, 6-24 CCAA) scored its first run in the top of the fourth.  Izzy Starr had a one-out double and scored on a single by Vanessa Saltos.
 
The hosts added two more runs in their half of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. The Jacks cut the Gator lead to 6-4 with a three-run fifth inning.  Anna Brondos had a lead-off single and went to second on a single by Hollee TravaoMicaela Harris singled to load the bases.  Brondos scored on a ground out by JoAna Mullins.  Travao scored on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Starr singled home Harris to cut the deficit to 6-4. 
 
The Jacks had a chance to cut the lead more in their half of the sixth.  Megan Escobar reached on a one-out error, but was stranded there as the Gators retired the next two batters.   Humboldt was retired in order in the seventh as SF State took the night cap 6-4. 
 
JACK STARS:  Izzy Starr had two of the seven hits by Humboldt in the night cap.  She also drove home a run and scored one of the Jacks' four runs.  Gaige Garcia pitched three scoreless innings of relief while giving up three hits and striking out one.
 
UP NEXT:  The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow with an 11am starting doubleheader in San Francisco.
