Humboldt Falls Short of Comeback in Overtime Thriller at Pomona

POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball team fell in the final seconds of Thursday night's overtime battle at Cal Poly Pomona, 72-71. Cal Poly Pomona held the advantage for a large majority of the game, but the 'Jacks erased a 15 point deficit with less than a minute to play in regulation, thanks to a four-point play from Ian Krishnan. The Broncos were victorious in the end, after Shyheim Parm hit a driving shot in the final seconds to hand Humboldt their fourth CCAA loss. The 'Jacks had four score in double digits, with Marlon Ruffin's 21 points leading all scorers.

Humboldt has dropped two in a row and now sit at 9-8 overall (7-4 CCAA). The Broncos improve to 8-6 overall and 5-5 in CCAA play.

The first half saw the 'Jacks possess their largest lead of the game, 22-17, after a Kareem Clark three-pointer and Cam Timmons layup at the 8:14 mark. Cal Poly Pomona exploded offensively before the half, going on a 22-4 run and claiming a 13-point advantage, 39-26.

The Broncos extended their lead to 15 points in the second half, but the 'Jacks didn't go away without a fight. In the final four minutes, Ian Krishnan and Marlon Ruffin heated up offensively and scored the last 15 Humboldt points by themselves, which tied the game at 65. The duo combined for 25 points in the second half alone. The 'Jacks shot 48 percent from the field and went 8-17 from 3PT range in the second half to complete a thrilling comeback and send the game to overtime.

The battle between the Cal Poly's saw three lead changes and two tied scores in overtime. A steal from Brandon Porter that led to a fast break slam gave the 'Jacks a 71-69 lead. Humboldt's defense sent Shyheim Parm to the free-throw line, where he went 1-for-2 and the 'Jacks maintained possession. After a Humboldt timeout, Cal Poly Pomona's defense proved tough and forced a turnover on the inbound, not allowing the 'Jacks to get the ball in play within five seconds. With 18 seconds on the clock, Parm drove to the basket and made an off-balance shot with his non-dominant hand to cap off a wild finish and give the Jacks their fourth CCAA loss.
