Five 'Jacks Reach Double Digits in Loss to First Place Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball team faced their toughest opponent of the season thus far in 15th ranked Cal State San Bernardino. The first place Coyotes handed the 'Jacks their third straight loss on Saturday afternoon with a final score of 101-76. Cam Timmons recorded a double-double with a season-high 14 rebounds to go along with 13 points. Humboldt now falls to 9-9 overall and 7-5 in conference play, putting them at third place in the CCAA standings.

The Lumberjacks grabbed their first lead just two minutes into the game after a Josh Berenbaum three-pointer put Humboldt up 7-4. Back-to-back baskets from Cam Timmons and Marlon Ruffin allowed the North Coast squad to maintain an advantage early. However, San Bernardino started to heat up offensively and proceeded to go on two 6-0 runs and one 9-0 run of their own before halftime. Although the 'Jacks were able to keep it within single digits near the midway point of the first half, the Coyotes' stellar 56.4 percent shooting from the field and 54.5 three-point percentage paved the way for a commanding 23 point lead over Humboldt at the half, 56-33.

The second half saw the 'Jacks cut the San Bernardino lead down to 14 points after a three-point play from Marlon Ruffin at the 15:54 mark. The Coyotes continued to control the pace and maintained a 20 plus point lead for a large majority of the rest of the game. Humboldt was outscored 58-26 in the paint and 22-15 on turnovers. The team will look to bounce back as the second half of the CCAA season begins next Thursday.
