CARSON, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt earned a hard-fought 1-0 win against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Toro Stadium on Friday night. A second-half goal from
Frida Duran Arellano lifted the Lumberjacks to their second conference win of the season, improving their record to 4-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in CCAA play.
The decisive moment came in the 52nd minute when Duran Arellano scored her third goal of the season (tied for the team-high), assisted by
Emma McChristie. McChristie's well-timed pass set up Duran Arellano, who found the back of the net to give the Lumberjacks the lead. The Toro defense couldn't recover, and the Lumberjacks held firm to secure the win.
Despite being outshot 12-10 overall, Humboldt's defense, led by goalkeeper
Carson Thomson-Terrel, held strong. Thomson-Terrel made three crucial saves to keep the Toros off the scoreboard, including two in the second half to preserve the clean sheet. The Lumberjacks were more efficient in front of goal, with five of their 10 shots on target.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (3-4-2, 1-1-1 CCAA) had several opportunities to break through, especially in the first half when they earned four corner kicks, but Humboldt's defense stayed organized. The Toros couldn't convert any of their six shots in the opening period, and Humboldt limited their chances in the second half.
Both teams battled physically throughout the match, but it was a clean contest with no cautions or ejections. Cal Poly Humboldt committed nine fouls compared to the Toros' four.
With this victory, the Lumberjacks look to build momentum as they head into the heart of their CCAA schedule.
