LOS ANGELES — Cal Poly Humboldt (5-5-1, 2-2-0 CCAA) secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 25 Cal State LA (6-1-3, 3-1-0 CCAA) at University Stadium, handing the Golden Eagles their first loss of the season. The win marks a significant milestone for the Lumberjacks as they continue to gain momentum in the conference standings after grabbing six points on the road this week.
"Great team win today," said head coach
Grant Landy. "We had to reach deep down to stick together this weekend and figure out how to get results. LA is such a hard team to play but we stuck around in the game and converted when we got the chance. I'm extremely proud of the team today."
In a fiercely contested match that remained scoreless until the final moments, Humboldt broke through in the 89th minute.
Frida Duran Arellano, the Jacks' standout midfielder, delivered the game-winning goal, heading in a perfectly placed assist off a corner kick. Arellano's fourth goal of the season came from 19 yards out, sending the ball to the far post, sealing a late victory for the Lumberjacks.
Despite being outshot 19-4, Humboldt's defense stood tall. Goalkeeper Carson Thomson Terrel recorded six saves, including several critical stops in the second half as Cal State LA relentlessly pushed forward. Humboldt's resilience, particularly on the backline, proved key in stifling a Golden Eagles' offense that had been prolific all season.
The match remained evenly contested in fouls (7-7), with both teams fighting for control in a physical contest. Cal Poly Humboldt earned three corner kicks to LA's nine but made their opportunity count when it mattered most.
This victory against a top-25 ranked opponent gives the Jacks a major confidence boost as they head into the next phase of the CCAA season.
