ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Chico State at College Creek Field on Sunday afternoon. The win pushed the Lumberjacks to a 6-6-1 overall record and 3-3-0 in conference play, moving them back into tournament contention, while the Wildcats dropped to 4-3-6 (1-2-3 CCAA).
"This was a very important win for us," said head coach
Grant Landy. "The last couple weeks have been so challenging with all of our travel, so to get a victory today was very meaningful. The players dug deep and stuck to the game plan. Our response to getting the third goal once Chico scored showed that we are developing the right mentality.
Frida Duran Arellano once again stepped up when we needed it, scoring two goals, and
Lily Shadden got her first career goal as a Lumberjack. I am very proud of the team with their resolve today."
Humboldt struck early, with senior forward
Frida Duran Arellano netting her fifth goal of the season in just the fifth minute. Assisted by
Camryn Patten and
Morgan Young, Duran Arellano's strike put the Jacks on the front foot. She followed up with a second goal at the 12-minute mark, doubling the lead and energizing the 233 fans in attendance.
Chico State responded in the 32nd minute with a goal from Jiana Martin, cutting Humboldt's lead to 2-1. However, just two minutes later, freshman
Lily Shadden found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal, assisted by
Alexis Blue, restoring Humboldt's two-goal cushion before halftime.
Despite strong pressure from the Wildcats in the second half, including a goal by Natalie Mendoza in the 80th minute, the Jacks' defense and goalkeeper
Carson Thomson-Terrel held firm. Thomson-Terrel recorded nine saves, with six coming in the second half to preserve the lead.
Chico State outshot Humboldt 21-9, including 11 shots on goal, but the Lumberjacks' efficient attacking play and Thomson Terrel's stellar performance between the posts proved decisive. Humboldt's defensive resilience, alongside standout performances from Duran Arellano and Shadden, sealed the critical CCAA victory.
The team wore pink jerseys for their annual pink match today in collaboration with the
Heather Janikowski Foundation. Every donation made went directly to the foundation's mission of empowering those affected by cancer and supporting families by helping pay for treatments.
