Cal Poly Humboldt Falls to Stanislaus State Despite Strong First Half Surge

TURLOCK, Calif. — Despite closing the first half on a commanding 13-2 run to take a 34-26 lead into halftime, Cal Poly Humboldt struggled in the second half, falling to Stanislaus State 72-58 on Thursday night at Fitzpatrick Arena. The Lumberjacks drop to 5-5 overall and 1-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play, while the Warriors improve to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

The Lumberjacks' first-half performance was highlighted by efficient shooting (52.0%) and aggressive defense, which fueled their surge to end the period. Rob Diaz III led the charge with 17 points, including two three-pointers and three steals. Aidan Fowler and Josiah Sanders each chipped in seven points to keep Humboldt in control early.

However, the second half told a different story. Humboldt's offense cooled off, shooting just 32.3% from the field and 16.7% from three-point range after the break. Meanwhile, Stanislaus State capitalized on the momentum shift, outscoring the Lumberjacks 46-24 in the final 20 minutes.

The Warriors were led by Jason Cibull, who came off the bench to score 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including four three-pointers. Jeremiah Jones contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while William Chavarin added 11 points.

Key statistics from the game included Humboldt's 12 steals and their 19 points off turnovers. Despite their defensive efforts, the Lumberjacks struggled to contain Stanislaus State's second-half shooting surge, as the Warriors hit 58.6% of their field goals and 50.0% from beyond the arc in the period.

Game Notes:

  • Humboldt's 13-2 run to close the first half gave them their largest lead of the game at eight points.
  • The Lumberjacks forced 22 turnovers but committed 19 of their own.
  • Stanislaus State out-rebounded Humboldt 34-31, including a 12-6 advantage in second-chance points.
  • The Warriors' bench outscored the Lumberjacks' reserves 32-20.

The Lumberjacks will aim to rebound as they head to Cal State Monterey Bay (3-7, 0-5 CCAA) for another CCAA contest this Saturday, January 4, with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
