Jacks Battle No. 3 Cal Poly Pomona to 2-2 Draw on the Road

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer continued its strong run of form Friday afternoon, earning an impressive 2-2 draw against the 2024 National Champions and No. 3-ranked Cal Poly Pomona (11-1-2, 4-1-2 CCAA) at Kellogg Stadium. The Jacks matched the nationally elite Broncos from start to finish, improving to 5-4-5 overall and 3-1-3 in CCAA play.

The result keeps Humboldt firmly in the postseason mix, as the Jacks' 12 conference points currently place them fourth in the CCAA standings—just one game out of first place behind Chico State (15 points), Cal Poly Pomona (14), and Cal State San Bernardino (13).

The match began with high drama as the Broncos struck early on a penalty kick by Vanessa Cruz in the fourth minute. Humboldt wasted little time responding, with Karsyn Ross netting her fourth goal of the season just two minutes later to even the score.

Pomona reclaimed the lead in the 21st minute with another penalty conversion, this time by Angelina Rivas, sending the hosts into halftime up 2-1 despite Humboldt's organized defensive effort.

The Jacks regrouped and came out of the break with energy and determination. In the 52nd minute, Josie Wolitzky notched her first goal of the season, finishing off a sharp assist from Nicole Beauchemin to level the match at 2-2. Humboldt's back line, anchored by Payton Heaney, Camryn Patten, and Kyla Okamoto, held strong under continued pressure, denying Pomona a go-ahead goal despite being outshot 14-5.

Goalkeeper Carson Thomson-Terrel was again a steady presence in net, recording six saves in the draw.

While Pomona controlled possession and set-piece opportunities (six corners to Humboldt's zero), the Jacks' defensive discipline and clinical finishing secured a key road result against one of the nation's top teams.

With postseason seeding tightening, Humboldt remains just one result away from potentially climbing into the top three of the CCAA standings.

The Jacks are back in action Sunday, October 26, when they travel to face Cal State LA (7-5-3, 3-4 CCAA), who enter on a two-match win streak. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. from University Stadium in Los Angeles.
