Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Drew Gwerder

Jacks Fall in Narrow Battle at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Despite outshooting Cal State LA 21-10 and creating several quality chances, the Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer team came up just short in a 1-0 defeat on Sunday morning at University Stadium.

The Golden Eagles' lone goal came in the 72nd minute when Reyna Roman finished a cross from Delia Bocanegra, threading a shot through traffic to the far post for the game-winner. Cal State LA now rides a three-match win streak.

Cal Poly Humboldt (5-5-5, 3-2-3 CCAA) controlled much of the second half, generating 14 of its 21 shots after the break. The Jacks had a prime opportunity to take the lead earlier in the match when a penalty kick deflected off the post. Goalkeepers Ari Beddoes and Carson Thomson-Terrel combined for five saves for the Jacks, while the Humboldt defense limited Cal State LA (7-5-3, 4-4-0 CCAA) to just six shots on target. The Jacks also held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and were whistled for only six fouls compared to the Golden Eagles' 13.

Although the Jacks created consistent offensive pressure, including six shots on goal, they were ultimately unable to find the back of the net.

Cal Poly Humboldt will look to bounce back next week with two key CCAA matchups to close out the regular season. The Jacks travel to face UC Merced on Friday, October 31 at 12:30 p.m. before returning home to College Creek Field to host Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday, November 2 at 11:30 a.m.

With three games remaining in the regular season, Cal Poly Humboldt (12 points) sits in fourth place in the CCAA standings with 12 points (3-2-3), positioned just behind Chico State (18 points), Cal Poly Pomona (17 points), and Cal State San Bernardino (16 points) as the race for postseason positioning intensifies.
