ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball continues its non-conference slate this weekend with a pair of contests at the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic in Rocklin, Calif. The Lumberjacks will face Northwest Nazarene on Friday, Nov. 21 at 5:00 p.m. before taking on host Jessup University on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. inside Warrior Arena.
The two-game trip marks Humboldt's third and fourth regular-season games as the 'Jacks look to break through after an 0–2 start against West Region opponents.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal Poly Humboldt opened its season at the West Region Tip-off Challenge in San Rafael, dropping matchups to Western Washington and Dominican.
The 'Jacks showed promise in their season opener, falling 83-71 to Western Washington despite a tightly contested first half. Shakir Odunewu powered Humboldt with 19 points and nine rebounds, shooting 8-for-11 from the field. Rob Jenkins added 16 points and five assists, while Brandon Bento-Jackson scored 14 points with four made threes. Humboldt shot 45.2% from the floor but was outpaced by a Vikings bench that contributed 43 points compared to Humboldt's four bench points.
Humboldt returned to action the next night but struggled from long range in an 89-61 loss to Dominican. The 'Jacks went 0 for 17 from three, despite hanging close early and taking a one-point lead into halftime. Jenkins once again led the scoring effort with 13 points, and Zaveion Bineyard posted a near double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Dominican erupted for 54 second-half points to pull away.
Through two games, Humboldt has seen consistent scoring from Jenkins (14.5 PPG), interior efficiency from Odunewu (70.6% shooting), and strong rebounding from Bineyard (8.0 rpg).
NIGHT VISION ON THE NIGHTHAWKS
Northwest Nazarene enters the weekend as a perennial challenger in the GNAC. Friday's matchup gives Humboldt an opportunity to sharpen its offensive execution after facing two tough competitors.
Humboldt's backcourt trio of Jenkins, Bento-Jackson, and Drew Ardouin will look to play key roles in handling defensive pressure and generating consistent perimeter scoring against a team coming off of a 23 point blowout win against UC Merced this past weekend.
'JACKS OVER JESSUP
Saturday's contest against the Warriors will give Humboldt another non-conference test against a program that reached the NAIA postseason two years ago before transitioning to NCAA Division II last year. For the 'Jacks, the matchup provides an opportunity to build cohesion, improve shot selection, and continue developing depth across the rotation.
The two teams will meet for the first time since 2015, where Humboldt came out on top by a wide margin, winning by 37 points. The 'Jacks will look to keep their undefeated streak against the Warriors intact.
