SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Despite a strong offensive effort led by Aidan Fowler and Rob Diaz III, Cal Poly Humboldt fell 81-67 to San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon in the Bay Area. With four games remaining in the regular season, the Lumberjacks sit in fourth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings, one game behind third place Cal State San Bernardino and one game ahead of Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State LA, who are tied for fifth place.
Humboldt (14-9, 10-8 CCAA) saw Fowler pace the offense with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Diaz III followed with 16 points, while Marsai Mason added 13 points on an efficient 5-of-8 from the field. Kalib LaCount chipped in eight points and a team-high seven assists.
San Francisco State (10-14, 8-10 CCAA) set the tone early, jumping out to a 42-32 lead at halftime behind sharp shooting from Caden Flowers, who finished with a game-high 19 points. The Gators capitalized on Humboldt's 21 turnovers, turning them into 26 points while also outscoring the Lumberjacks in fast break points, 17-9.
Despite a better shooting performance in the second half (46.4% from the field and 40% from three), Humboldt was unable to overcome the early deficit. The Gators held firm defensively, forcing key turnovers and converting timely baskets to maintain their double-digit lead down the stretch.
With postseason implications on the line, the Lumberjacks turn their attention to a pivotal Southern California road trip next week. Humboldt will face first place No. 17 Cal State Dominguez Hills (20-4, 17-1 CCAA) on Thursday, February 20, before a critical matchup against Cal State LA (11-13, 9-9 CCAA) on Saturday, February 22, in the final road games of the regular season.
