ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt women's soccer opened its 2025 season at College Creek Field on Thursday morning, showing fight and resilience in front of the home crowd but ultimately dropped a 1-0 decision to Dominican (CA).
The Lumberjacks (0-1-0) outshot the Penguins 7-5 overall, with six of those attempts coming in the second half. Midfielder Karsyn Ross led Humboldt's attack, registering a team-high three shots including the team's lone attempt on goal. Sari Murphy, Alexis Blue, Josie Wolitzky, and Camryn Patten each added efforts on frame, keeping Dominican's defense under pressure.
In goal, Humboldt split time between Carson Thomson-Terrel and Ari Beddoes. Thomson-Terrel played the opening 45 minutes, making one save to keep the match scoreless at halftime. Beddoes entered after the break and recorded two saves, but a penalty kick from Dominican's Ysabella Belandres in the 49th minute broke the deadlock.
Despite conceding, Beddoes and the backline — anchored by Wolitzky, Patten, and a disciplined midfield — held strong against continued Dominican attacks. Humboldt's defense kept the Penguins limited to just four shots on target across 90 minutes.
The Jacks nearly equalized late, creating several looks in the attacking third, but Dominican goalkeeper came up with the one save she needed to preserve the shutout.
