Lumberjacks Men’s Basketball Ready for Key NorCal Rivalry Series with Chico State

ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball continues CCAA play this week with a two-game series against Chico State (6-7, 4-4 CCAA), hosting the Wildcats at Lumberjack Arena on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. before traveling to Art Acker Gymnasium for a Saturday afternoon rematch at 3:00 p.m. on Jan. 17.

Humboldt enters the week at 7-7 overall and 5-3 in CCAA play after seeing a four-game winning streak snapped last weekend by #10 Cal State East Bay. Despite the setback, the Lumberjacks remain firmly in the conference race as they prepare for a pivotal two-game stretch against a familiar league opponent.

LAST TIME OUT

The Lumberjacks opened last week with one of their most efficient offensive performances of the season, shooting lights out in a 90-83 road victory at San Francisco State for their fourth straight win. Humboldt connected on nearly 58 percent of its field goals and over 60 percent from three-point range, finishing 14-of-23 from deep in a great scoring effort. Drew Ardouin led the way with 22 points off the bench, knocking down five three-pointers, while Zaveion Bineyard added 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Wayne Hampton III contributed 12 points and seven assists, and the Lumberjacks received 31 bench points while scoring 18 points in transition.

Humboldt's winning streak came to an end on Saturday against #10 Cal State East Bay, as the nationally ranked Pioneers pulled away early in a 95-53 decision in Hayward. East Bay shot over 60 percent in the first half and built a commanding halftime lead, forcing 22 Humboldt turnovers and converting them into 22 points. Bineyard paced the Lumberjacks with 10 points, while Shakir Odunewu and Tyriq McNeal each added nine. Despite the loss, Humboldt remained competitive on the glass and received 26 points from its bench as it closed a challenging Bay Area road trip.

THE BATTLE FOR NORCAL

Chico State (6-7, 4-4 CCAA) enters the week looking to climb the conference standings and poses a familiar test for the Lumberjacks on both ends of the floor. The Wildcats have split their last four games, but the losses within that stretch served to be an overtime loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills and a two-point loss to #10 Cal State East Bay. They will look to continue their strong play and rhythm against a Humboldt squad that has leaned on perimeter shooting and rebounding throughout conference play. Humboldt will aim to defend home court Thursday night before adjusting quickly for the road environment in Saturday's rematch.

The Lumberjacks have fallen to Chico State in four of the last five matchups heading into the series and will look to bring the Wildcats momentum to an end.
