ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball opens the new year at home, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills in a CCAA matchup scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff today, Friday, Jan. 2, before welcoming Cal State Los Angeles on Sunday, Jan. 4 at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be played inside Lumberjack Arena, with Friday marking Hometown Heroes Night (free admission for local first responders, military personnel, and community heroes) while Sunday will be Youth/Camper Day (free general admission for kids and campers - postgame autographs).
LAST TIME OUT
Humboldt enters the weekend riding momentum from its most recent win, an 83-72 road victory over Cal State Monterey Bay, which marked the team's first double-digit victory in conference play this season. The Lumberjacks improved to 4–6 overall and 2–2 in CCAA action, looking to continue building consistency as league play heats up.
The Lumberjacks closed out non-conference play with a tightly contested matchup at Monterey Bay, featuring 14 lead changes and six ties over the first 30 minutes. Humboldt pulled away in the second half behind balanced scoring, timely shooting, and a dominant performance from the bench.
Wayne Hampton III led the way with a career-high 22 points, going 5-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line while knocking down three triples. Rob Jenkins added 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists off the bench, providing a versatile scoring and facilitation presence. Drew Ardouin contributed 12 efficient points, Zaveion Bineyard recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Shakir Odunewu chipped in eight points and eight boards to help Humboldt control the glass.
The Lumberjacks' depth proved decisive, outscoring Monterey Bay 44-30 in bench points. After a 32-32 halftime tie, Humboldt shot nearly 48 percent from the floor in the second half and went 16-of-22 from the free-throw line to steadily pull away and close the calendar year on a high note.
DWARFING DOMINGUEZ HILLS
Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-3, 3-1 CCAA) enters Arcata looking to challenge a Humboldt squad that has leaned on balanced scoring and bench production in recent games. The Toros, who made the NCAA DII national championship game last season, have found boat loads of success against their opponents this season, winning seven of their last eight games. The Lumberjacks will look to leverage their successes from their last game, home-court advantage, and depth to maintain momentum and go over .500 in the conference standings.
L.A. TO HUMBOLDT
Cal State Los Angeles (6–3, 3–1 CCAA) comes to Lumberjack Arena on Sunday with a high-powered offense, averaging over 80 points in its last two matchups and scoring over 100 in a blowout win against San Francisco State. Humboldt's defensive intensity and ability to control the boards will be crucial against a team that has found their rhythm offensively in previous meetings. The 'Jacks aim to showcase the defensive improvements that helped them secure their recent double-digit win at Monterey Bay.
