Men’s Basketball Carries Recent Surge Into Conference Home Stand

ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball returns home this week riding momentum from a couple of statement wins, as the Lumberjacks host a pair of CCAA matchups at Lumberjack Arena. Humboldt will welcome Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Jan. 22 for the Cal Poly Clash at 7:30 p.m., before hosting Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3:00 p.m. in the White-Out Game, where fans are encouraged to wear white.

Humboldt enters the week having won six of its last seven games and sitting at 9-7 overall and 7-3 in the conference. The Lumberjacks are firmly in the CCAA race as they open a pivotal homestand against two Southern California opponents.

LAST TIME OUT

The Lumberjacks delivered one of the most dramatic wins of the season last Thursday, erasing a seven-point deficit in the final minute to stun Chico State, 78-77, on Wayne Hampton III's game-winning three-pointer with 0.7 seconds remaining at Lumberjack Arena. Humboldt outscored the Wildcats in the paint and capitalized on turnovers, with Zaveion Bineyard leading the way with 21 points while Shakir Odunewu added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Hampton finished with 17 points and eight assists in the thrilling victory.

Humboldt followed up with a dominant 96-77 road win at Chico State on Saturday to complete its first season sweep of the Wildcats since 2015. The Lumberjacks shot a blistering 63.0 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from three-point range, knocking down 12 three-pointers and pulling away in the second half. Brandon Bento-Jackson tied career highs with six made threes and 20 points, while Bineyard poured in 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Odunewu recorded his second straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in just 19 minutes as Humboldt showcased its depth and offensive efficiency.

BESTING THE BRONCOS

Cal Poly Pomona (9-7, 4-6 CCAA) visits Arcata on Thursday night for the Cal Poly Clash, a matchup that carries significant implications in the conference standings. After winning eight of their first ten games of the season, the Broncos have taken a tumble down the overall standings as well as conference standings, losing five of their last six. This is the first of two matchups against the two squads this year.

The Broncos have shown flashes of offensive firepower throughout the season and will look to disrupt Humboldt's rhythm on the road to improve their lackluster conference record.

CONQUERING THE COYOTES

Saturday's contest against Cal State San Bernardino (8-9, 5-5 CCAA) closes the homestand with the White-Out Game at Lumberjack Arena. The Coyotes enter the weekend battling for position in the middle of the CCAA standings, setting up another physical and competitive matchup as conference play moves into the second half.

Humboldt will look to continue its strong play on both ends of the floor while defending home court in front of the Lumberjack Arena crowd.
