Humboldt Returns Home to Host Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic

ARCATA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Humboldt volleyball team returns to Lumberjack Arena this week to host the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic from Thursday, Sept. 3, through Saturday, Sept. 5. The six-team tournament will feature 11 matches across three days.

Humboldt will open the tournament and its home schedule against Northwest Nazarene on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Lumberjacks will then face Dominican on Friday at 5 p.m. before closing the weekend against Jessup on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Nebraska Kearney and Rollins will also compete in the tournament, with all matches taking place inside Lumberjack Arena.

LAST TIME OUT

Humboldt enters its home-opening weekend with a 2-1 record after winning two of three matches at the Oredigger Volleyball Classic in Golden, Colo.

The Lumberjacks fell to host Colorado School of Mines in four sets before responding with a 3-1 victory over Colorado Christian. Humboldt closed the tournament with a sweep of UCCS, winning by set scores of 26-24, 25-23 and 25-22.

Humboldt finished the weekend with 136 kills, 149 digs, 26 total blocks and 17 service aces. The Lumberjacks hit .207 across 11 sets and won six of their final seven frames.

Graysen Trupp led Humboldt with 35 kills and a .363 hitting percentage. Trupp recorded 13 kills while hitting .522 against Mines, added 14 kills against Colorado Christian and finished with eight kills and no errors in the sweep of UCCS.

Elizabeth Jade Andrade anchored the back row with 53 digs, five service aces and nine assists. Trupp and Andrade were both named to the Oredigger Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team, with Andrade earning recognition as the only libero selected.

Brielle Wilson directed the offense with 69 assists, while Claire Crawford added 42. Branson Lennon contributed 25 kills and 31 digs over the three matches.

NIGHTHAWKS NEXT

Humboldt will open the tournament Thursday at 4 p.m. against Northwest Nazarene in the Lumberjacks' first home match of the season.

The Nighthawks enter the weekend with a 4-0 record after completing a perfect run at the Otter Invitational. Northwest Nazarene earned victories over Sioux Falls, Dominican, Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Marcos, with two of those matches requiring five sets.

Northwest Nazarene is hitting .248 through its first four matches and has recorded 57 service aces. Abby Black leads the Nighthawks with 82 kills, averaging 4.56 per set while hitting .333.

Thursday's match will begin a stretch of six consecutive home contests for the Lumberjacks.

DUEL WITH DOMINICAN

The Lumberjacks will return to the court Friday at 5 p.m. to face Dominican.

The Penguins enter the tournament with a 1-3 record after competing at the Otter Classic in Seaside.

Dominican earned a five-set victory over host Cal State Monterey Bay and played another five-set match against Cal State San Marcos. The Penguins also faced Northwest Nazarene and Sioux Falls during their opening weekend.

Friday's contest will be Humboldt's second match of the tournament and the first of two meetings between the programs this season.

JACKS VS. JESSUP

Humboldt will conclude the Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic against Jessup on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Warriors enter the week with a 1-3 record after opening their season at the Sunbird Classic in Fresno, Calif. Jessup earned a four-set victory over UC Merced and dropped matches against Fresno Pacific, Menlo and Stanislaus State.


Saturday's match will close a busy weekend inside Lumberjack Arena and provide Humboldt with its final non-conference contest before the beginning of CCAA play.
