Lumberjacks scrap for five-set win over Warriors

ARCATA — Emerging from an up-and-down performance, Humboldt State took control in the final two sets of a 21-25, 25-11, 19-25, 25-7, 15-10 volleyball win over Cal State Stanislaus on Friday.

The victory improves Humboldt State's overall record to 7-11 overall, and the Jacks moved to 5-6 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State Stanislaus dropped to 4-17 and 1-10 in league matches.

"In the fifth set, our seniors stepped up and fought especially hard," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "It's always a good feeling when you come away from a hard fight with a win."

One of those senior leaders, Lynsey Adams, finishe dthe night with 14 kills and a .263 hitting percentage to pace the Jacks' offensively. Liz Shannon had 19 assists and 12 digs for HSU, while Toni Kroeker added a team-best eight blocks.

Cal State Stanislaus had three players with double figures in kills, paced by Megan Loghry's 16. Jen Gee added 12, and Lianne Bicchio had 10 kills with 16 digs for the double-double.

Long rallies characterized the opening set, neither team able to grab the momentum. The score was tied at 9-9 when HSU took its first advantage, scoring five straight to take a 14-9 lead and force the Warriors to call a timeout.

The Warriors responded by scoring four of next five points to make it 15-13, the final two coming on HSU attack errors. Cal State Stanislaus continued to take advantage of the Jacks' miscues, tying the score at 16-16 on a long hit before Gee drove a kill off the HSU block to give CSUS the lead.

Trailing by two with Danielle Wells serving, HSU pulled even at 20-20 on an ace. But the Warriors surged again behind Gee's ace and another long Jacks' hit for set point. Victoria Costa sealed the win with a resounding cross-court kill.

"In the first set, we had some innoportune errors," Woodstra said. "We couldn't finish, and Cal State Stanislaus fought hard."

Early in the second set, Jacks trailed 4-3, when Jo Arazdon's kill started a run of eight straight points that gave HSU a comfortable lead. After failing to block a ball in the first set, the Jacks put down 10 in the second on the way to a 25-11 win.

Set three offered a more evenly-contested battle, neither team leading by more than a single point early until the Warriors put together a string that gave them a 13-11 lead. After taking control, they finished the set with a 6-1 run to go up two games to one.

It was all HSU throughout the fourth set, the Jacks blasting out with a 15-3 run that featured eight straight points during Mallory Briney's serve. Adams and Oceana Matsubu added two big kills each to the surge that also included four straight attack errors by the Warriors.

HSU kept the momentum rolling, hitting at a .526 clip to earn a 25-7 win and tie the match at two games each.

A service ace by Nicki Brown opened the final set, turning around the Warriors' fortunes. But Adams blasted a kill down the far side to even the score, setting the tone for another close contest.

Nelson's continued a rally with an acrobatic dig, the served an ace to give the Jacks match point at 14-9. Wells tipped a ball over the Warriors' block to claim the match.
