SAN FRANCISCO – Goals from Sergio Villalva and Spencer Schwandt led the way as San Francisco State recorded a 2-0 win over the Humboldt State men's soccer team in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Friday.
With the loss, the Jacks drop to 7-6-4 overall and 2-6-3 in CCAA play while the Gators snap their two-game losing streak and improve to 8-8-2 overall and 5-7-1 in the CCAA.
“I thought the guys played hard today,” said Humboldt State men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “We just got unlucky at times and it cost us.”
The game remained scoreless until the 28th minute when Villalva took a pass from Mario Hernandez to open the day's scoring.
“Typically, we don't give up goals like that,” said Cumbo. “We just gave (Villalva) time to tee it up and he had one heck of a finish.”
The Gators doubled their lead 15 minutes into the second half on Schwandt's fourth goal of the season. Charles Conway and Dylan Glass were credited with the assists.
For the game, SFSU outshot HSU 18-7 and 7-2 on shots on goal. Jacks goalkeeper
Drew Ryan finished the game with five saves.
Humboldt State will finish its 2008 road schedule when they face Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday. Kickoff in Seaside is scheduled for 2 p.m.
