LOS ANGELES – Despite out blocking the No. 14 nationally ranked Cal State L.A. 14 to 9, the Humboldt State volleyball team fell in four sets on
Friday.
The Lumberjacks fell 7-14 overall and 5-8 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, as the Golden Eagles improved their record to 16-3 overall and 9-3 in the CCAA.
Mallory Briney led the team with a .300 hitting percentage, while tying
Lynsey Adams for the team-high of eight kills. Following closely behind was
Toni Kroeker with seven kills. Recording double-double figures were
Liz Shannon and
Joliann Arzadon with 15 assists and 11 digs and 14 assists and 12 digs, respectively, as
Dani Nelson contributed 12 digs for the Jacks.
Gabriela Bulawczyk paced the Golden Eagles with 18 kills (.371 hitting percentage) while adding 12 digs for a double-double night. Kaylynne De La Rosa and Kelsie Brown dished out 23 and 12 assists, respectively and Stefanie Gay added 14 digs.
HSU's .308 hitting percentage helped the Jacks take set one 25-17. The Jacks recorded the set's first two points and were able to keep the Golden Eagles at arms reach before two attacking errors on the Eagles, back-to-back kills from Briney and Shannon and a service ace from Nelson contributed to a Jacks' five-point run that helped secure their lead.
In different fate, the Golden Eagles tallied four straight points to open set two. Cal State L.A. tallied the next six points for a 10-2 lead that never let up to record a 25-12 final score.
Entering set three tied the Golden Eagles started in the same fashion as set two, registering eight of the set's first 10 points. Cal State L.A.'s hopes for dominating the set were cut short when the Jacks came in two points at 21-19. But two Jacks' service errors and two kills by Chelsea Hamilton ended the set with a 25-21 score.
After a hard fight, point-for-point battle, the Golden Eagles' three-point run at 14-12 took the lead that helped them take the final set 25-17.
“We started off great,” Humboldt State head volleyball coach Sue Woodstra said. “In the match we made a lot of unforced errors, especially when we needed to step it up. The team did some really good things, our blocks and defense were good, but we just couldn't' follow through.”
Humboldt State travels to Carson to face Cal State Dominguez Hills on
Saturday with a 7 p.m. start.
