Jacks dominate AAU for first win of season

ARCATA – The Humboldt State women's soccer claimed its first win of the season in dominating fashion, beating Academy of Art University 3-0 on Monday.

With the win, the Jacks improved to 1-2 while Academy of Art fell to 0-2.

“We got exactly what we wanted in our home-opener,” said Humboldt State head women's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “We played confidently and I'm very happy with this win.”

The Jacks looked the superior team from start, dominating possession and continuously getting opportunities in front of the goal.

Kim Carroll broke through to open the scoring in the 14th minute, dribbling through the Urban Knights' defense and putting the ball in the back of the net.

The Jacks struck again nine minutes later when freshman defender Karen Pontoni headed in a lose ball to claim her first collegiate goal.

Carroll struck again half way through the second half for her second goal of the game after receiving a through ball from freshman midfielder Gracie Gartrell.

For the game, the Jacks outshot the Urban Knights 16-1.

“We had the same types of opportunities tonight as we did last week, but it was a matter of putting them away,” Cumbo said.

The Jacks defense was equally impressive, only allowing one shot the entire game. HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg was only called into action one time and recorded her first shutout of the year.

“Defensively it was our strongest game so far this year,” Cumbo said. “(senior captain) Kelsey Gomula played one of the best games I have ever seen her play. She was communicated extremely well.”

The victory marked Cumbo's 100th career win at HSU.

“I'm proud to get 100 wins and especially proud to have it be in front our home crowd,” Cumbo said. “I'm ready to get 100 more.”

The Jacks continue their three-game homestand Friday night when they take on Oregon Institute of Technology. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. in the Redwood Bowl.
