ARCATA –
Josh Suggs' late goal was the difference as Humboldt State topped San Francisco State 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Sunday.
With the win, the Jacks improved 4-1-2 and 1-1-1 in CCAA play while the Gators fell to 2-5-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the CCAA.
“Like Friday, it was another challenging environment to play in,” Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo said. “The guys knew this was an important game for us going into Wednesday against Sonoma State and they answered the call.”
HSU got on the board 12 minutes in when
Roland Demombynes put in his third goal of the season after combining nicely with
Matt Colwell and
Lyle Menk.
San Francisco State turned up the pressure in the second half, and the Gators leveled the game in the 74th minute on a Spencer Schwandt goal.
The Jacks defense held tight, with goalkeeper
Drew Ryan coming up big on two quality SFSU scoring chances. Ryan finished the game with four saves.
“The defense showed really good composure and stayed very organized in the second half,” Cumbo said.
With six minutes remaining Suggs shook loose a defender after taking a pass from Demombynes and buried it into the far corner to give the Jacks the lead.
“Both goals we scored today were great,” said Cumbo. “Certain guys knew they had to step up and be successful for us today and they did that.”
The Jacks will hit the road to face Sonoma State in a mid-week CCAA contest. Kickoff at Rohnert Park is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday.
