ARCATA – Living up to its national ranking, No. 5 Cal State Los Angeles defeated Humboldt State 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Friday night.
With the loss, the Jacks drop to 4-2-3 and 1-2-2 in the CCAA while CSULA remains undefeated at 7-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the CCAA.
“At times we generated some quality chances but it was tough to get things going,” said Humboldt State men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo.
The Golden Eagles got going quikly, immediately putting pressure on the Jacks defense. They broke through 16 minutes in when Josh Sandoval scored from the top of the box off of a loose ball.
“They did a good job taking advantage of their chances,” Cumbo said. “Good teams will make you pay.”
Despite being outshot 13-3 in the first half, the Jacks held their ground. However, the Golden Eagles doubled their lead six minutes into the second half on a goal by Derrek Horn.
HSU keeper
Drew Ryan finished the game with four saves but had to leave the game because of an injury with 30 minutes to go.
The Jacks will take a break from CCAA Sunday when they host UC Santa Cruz. Kickoff is scheduled for noon in the Redwood Bowl.
