Jacks down Gators 2-1 in overtime

SAN FRANCISCO – With just 13 seconds remaining in overtime, senior mid Lloyd Sinclair scored the game winner to lift the Humboldt State Men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over San Francisco State on Friday afternoon.  The win improves the Jacks record to 4-9-2 overall and 3-7-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.  The Gators fall to 5-7-3 and 2-6-3 in conference.

The win, the sides third in its last five matches, lifts the Jacks out of sixth place in the CCAA North.  HSU climbs over SFSU and Cal State Monterey Bay to assume fourth place in the division.  The Lumberjacks are now three points behind third-place Cal State Stanislaus.

Humboldt State, looking to get more shots on frame, were much more accurate in the first half.  Although they didn't find the back of the net, HSU took five shots and all were on-goal.  Josh Suggs took four of his game high 10 shots in the first period and all reached Gators' keeper Thomas Comer.  Despite their accuracy, Humboldt State was out shot 9-5 in the first half and the two teams went to the half tied 0-0.

San Francisco State broke the tie in the 64th minute.  Antonio Ugarte beat Jacks' keeper Kyle Verle with a header off a free kick to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.

For the next twenty minutes the Jacks slowly ramped up the intensity.  They out shot the Gators 5-1 and at the 83:39 the effort paid off.  Brandon Perrier struck a corner kick that Josh Suggs took from just outside the 18 and put in the back of the net at the near post for the equalizer.  It was Suggs' team leading eighth goal of the season and Perrier's first assist.

"We have been working on set pieces that play to our advantage," said had coach Christian Johnson.  "That one was a low ball that Josh took and hammered home."

The Jacks had a chance to win in regulation, when at the 84:25 mark Suggs fired a shot the hit off the post.  The second half ended with the teams tied 1-1 and HSU outshooting SFSU  8-5 in the second half.

The overtime was dominated by Humboldt State.  The Jacks outshot the Gators 3-0 with Suggs taking HSU's first two shots.  One was saved by SFSU's Comer and the other was just wide of the net.

At the 99:47 mark, Sinclair lifted his shot and tucked it inside the right post for the 2-1 win.  It was his second goal of the season and his second game winner.  Suggs was credited with an assist on the goal, his second of the year.

"The whole day we made them earn everything they got," Johnson said.  "I was really pleased that despite giving up the first goal, we found a way to respond.  After they scored we turned it up a notch and really pressured them for that point on.

"The boys are playing right now and really for the past two weeks, the way we thought they would at the beginning of the year.  They have a lot of confidence and are showing it."

Kyle Verle made six saves and allowed one goal en route his fourth win of the season.  His record is now 4-8-2.

The win gives the Jacks revenge for a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of SFSU on Sept. 27 in Redwood Bowl.

Humboldt State concludes its Bay Area road trip on Sunday in Seaside.  The Jacks face Cal State Monterey Bay at 2:00 p.m.
