HSU takes two 5-game wins at California Clash

SAN FRANCISCO  — Two different scenarios both ended positively for the Humboldt State volleyball team, which claimed a pair of victories in five-game matches at the California Clash on Friday.

One week after falling in five tough games to Dominican University, Humboldt State came from behind to take the final two contests  against the same opponent in the day's early match, posting a 25-22, 26-28, 19-25, 25-15, 15-12 win over the Penguins.

Oceana Matsubu had 13 kills and 10 digs, and Danielle Wells also put away 13 kills to help the Jacks claim earn their first win of the season. Jo Arzadon had 45 assists and nine digs, while Dani Nelson served five aces and led the team with 24 digs.

"This morning against Dominican was a fun match," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "Both teams played hard, and it was rewarding to come out with a win."

In the day's second match, the Jacks grabbed decisive wins in the first two games, but had to survive a rallly by Notre Dame de Namur to prevail, 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 18-25, 15-10.

Arzadon was again rock solid for the Jacks, distributing 49 assists while coming up with 10 digs. Matsubu paced the offense again with 14 kills, while Allison Drobish had 13 and an impressive .440 hitting percentage. Lesley Kalbrener added 10 kills and seven blocks, as the Jacks out-blocked their opponents, 15 team blocks to seven.

"We struggled this afternoon. We dominiated, but then let up," Woodstra said. "We played well with our backs to the wall, which is not the position we want to be in,  but still good to see."

Humboldt State continues its participation in the tournament Saturday with another pair of matches. First up is a 9 a.m. encounter with Saint Martin's, and the Jacks will be back on the court to face Hawaii Pacific at 4:30 p.m.
