ARCATA — Southern California is this week's destination, as the Lumberjack volleyball team returns to the road following two weekends at home. The Lumberjacks go in search of California Collegiate Athletic Association success when they take on Cal State Los Angeles on Friday and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday. Match time is 7 p.m. each evening.
Head-to-Head
CSULA claimed both meetings in 2009, giving the Eagles an 11-3 advantage all-time. Humboldt State earned a pair of wins over CSUDH a year ago, going five sets at Carson and taking the Toros in three at Arcata. HSU still trails the one-sided series, 5-11.

Lumberjack Notes
There's no doubt that last Friday's slugfest against CSU Monterey Bay showed the potential that Humboldt State possesses. But after pushing that match to five against a top-25 ranked team, the Jacks sputtered the following night against San Francisco State. "There was an obvious letdown," head coach Sue Woodstra said. "That's an indication of our youth. We still need to develop the ability to maintain an intense style of play." …The Jacks' primary attack has come from junior
Oceana Matsubu, who has amassed more than twice as many attempts (536) and kills (126) than any other Lumberjack. "We would like to have a more balanced attack, but our offense is predicated by our passing, and we haven't passed well enough to be able to spread it around," Woodstra said. …Senior Jo Arzadon continues to apply her skills all over the court. HSU's primary setter has 292 assists, 48 kills and a team-high 15 service aces. She also has 99 digs and 19 blocks.
Opponents Notes
Cal State Los Angeles (6-6 overall, 3-5 CCAA) is yet another Top 25 ranked team from the CCAA, listed No. 23 in last week's rankings. The Eagles have struggled the past two weekends, however, and have lost four straight matches. Last week they fell to Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego. All four losses have been on the road. …Setter Amrita Tuladhar is averaging 9.64 assists per game and also has 25 service aces to her credit. …CSU Dominguez Hills is 1-12 on the season and 1-7 in league, the Toros' lone win coming against Cal Poly Pomona. Last week they dropped matches to Cal State East Bay, in four, and UC San Diego, in three sets. …Freshman Denise Devine is the Toros' top hitter with 151 kills on the season. Abbey Prussa has 21 blocks to her credit, an average of just under a half block per set.
Woodstra's Words
“Cal State Los Angeles has been struggling, but they always play very physical and hit the ball extremely hard. We have to try to keep them on their heels." … "Dominguez Hills has improved from past years. They have a good middle, but we match that. To be successful we have to concentrate on closing down Devine and their other hitters." …"We're still searching for the best combination to put on the floor. The group that worked well together Friday didn't do that Saturday."
