Sweeping the season series against CSUDH improved Humboldt State's record to 2-23 overall and 2-19 in the CCAA. The Toros dropped to 3-24 in all matches and 2-19 in conference contests.
Several players contributed to the Jacks' big win, led by
Oceana Matsubu's double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs.
Taylor Manuel added 12 kills and
Toni Kroeker had 10 with a team-high five block assists.
Brooke Ferguson paced the Jacks with 21 digs and
Channel Washington had 19.
"It was a good, steady win," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "We played aggressively throughout. We served well, blocked well, and played good defense."
Hitting with authority, Manuel helped HSU gain an 11-7 lead in the opening set. The Toros surged back, keeping the deficit within two points until HSU heated up again behind Matsubu's and Kroeker's attack, all off tidy sets from Jo Arzadon.
"Toni had some nice swings tonight," Woodstra said. "Jo did a nice job of getting the ball to her."
Cal State Dominguez Hills kept threatening the comeback, pulling within three at 20-17 on an HSU attack error. But hitting errors also plagued the Toros, and the Jacks took advantage to eventually claim the victory on Washington's kill.
Humboldt State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set before the Toros answered with Abby Prusa's kill. A series of attack errors on HSU brought the set back to a one-point margin, with Humboldt State holding a 6-5 lead.
Kroeker and Matsubu again found the range, Kroeker adding a block and a kill and Matsubu driving the ball down the line for another kill. Arzadon and Kroeker, the Jacks' only seniors, combined for a block that gave HSU a 15-7 advantage.
Manuel ended the set with a driving attack down the middle of the court, giving HSU a two-set advantage.
CSU Dominguez Hills challenged in a frenzied third set, pulling within a point at 16-15 on a kill down the line. Denise Devine's service ace tied the set, and a long hit by HSU gave the Toros their first lead of the evening at 17-16.
The surge continued behind Devine's serving, stretching the Toros' lead to 22-16 before HSU stopped it with Alison Drobish's kill. Humboldt State came back to within 24-22, but a miss-hit ended it in favor of CSUDH.
After breifly falling behind, HSU reclaimed the momentum with a dominating effort in the fourth and final set. The Jacks put together a 10-2 surge behind Manuel and Matsubu, and two resounding kills by Matsubu ended the evening.
Humboldt State plays its final match of the season Saturday, taking on Cal State Los Angeles at 7:30 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena. The Jacks will honor seniors Arzadon and Kroeker prior to the first serve.
