Kroeker got the Jacks going in the first set, putting away four kills without a hitting error. All came off tidy sets from her senior counterpart, Arzadon.
The set remained tight and was tied at 17-17 when Gonzalez attacked cross-court to provide CSLA with the advantage. A soft touch by Zuzana Cizova kept the momentum going, and when the score reached 23-19, the Jacks were forced to call timeout. Chelsea Hamilton pounded down a kill to eventually seal the set, 25-21.
The Eagles held the early edge in the second set, but Kroeker continued to shine in her final collegiate match, putting away a kill and combining on a block to pull the Jacks within one at 12-11. Washington's kill and a block by
Allison Drobish and Washington provided Humboldt State with its first lead at 14-13.
The war waged on, the squads exchanging points before HSU put together four straight to forge an advantage. Matsubu's tip and a CSLA hitting error gave the Jacks a 21-17 lead.
Drobish pounded down a kill and the Jack forged a 24-20 lead before the Eagles rallied to forced a timeout at 24-23. The move proved productive, as Washington put away the set with a kill down the line to even the match at one each.
Cal State L.A. asserted itself in the third set, moving out to a 16-8 lead with five straight points, two of them coming on Taupepa attacks. The Lumberjacks answered with four consecutive points, including two kills by
Ashley Neale.
The Eagles finished strong, however, earning match point at 24-18. After
Noel Eaton pulled the Jacks one point closer, a Jacks' attack error ended in favor of the Eagles to give them a 2-1 set advantage.
Hamilton helped the Eagles take another early lead before HSU's Drobish tipped two balls to cut the cushion to two points. Humboldt wouldn't go away, pulling within one at 20-19 on an Eagles' miss-hit, then tying the score at 20-20 on another.
HSU claimed a 23-21 lead on another Washington kill, then earned set pint on a smack down by Kroeker. Washington finished the set with another big hit, sending the match to a fifth.
Gonzalez opened the third set with two kills down the opposite side. Cizova added another, and Hamilton's service ace put the Eagles up, 4-0.
Three straight errors by CSLA helped HSU within one, but a kill by Marquis and a service ace reestablished a three-point lead. Twice more the Jacks battled back on a one-point deficit, but critical errors down the stretch gave the Eagles the match.
