Warriors steal 3-2 victory from Jacks

TURLOCK – For the second night in a row, Humboldt State fought to another five-set result, this time surrendering the loss. The Jacks won the first and third sets, but couldn't pull away with the victory against Cal State Stanislaus, losing 3-2 (25-20,26-24,25-19,25-22,16-14).

Humboldt State drops to 3-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, 6-11 overall. The Warriors improve to 9-8 overall, 5-8 in CCAA play. The Jacks return to Lumberjack Arena Wednesday for the first of three consecutive home matches as they take on Sonoma State at 7 p.m.

Oceana Matsubu led the hitting game for the Jacks with a match-high 22 kills on the night. Allison Drobish—who also had seven blocks—and Alexa Rosendale combined for another 22 kills for HSU. Lianne Vicchio and Eva Chafeh led the attack for the Warriors with 19 and 16 kills, respectively.

The Jacks started strong, not surrendering a lead until Cal State Stanislaus went ahead 10-9 off a kill from Chafeh. An eight-point scoring run gave Humboldt State a comfortable 22-13 lead, but the Warriors were able to come within four points before Matsubu's kill ended the first set at 25-20.

Both teams played a tight second set with neither squad holding more than a three-point lead throughout the set. The Warriors pulled ahead 14-12 off an attacking error from the Jacks, but a kill from Bailey Kotas and a service ace from Drobish tied the set at 14-14. Neither team would lead by more than one point until HSU came within match point at 24-22. CSU Stanislaus would not lie down quietly and strung four points together for the 26-24 win.

Humboldt State claimed the third set without ever letting Cal State Stanislaus take the lead to put the Jacks up 2-1 in the match.

Matsubu started the fourth set with a kill for the Jacks, but the Warriors responded quickly by pulling ahead with a 6-2 lead. Matsubu had two kills to go with two Warrior errors to tie the set at six apiece. CSU Stanislaus grabbed the lead once again and never let HSU steal it back as the Warriors won 25-22, sending the match into a fifth and deciding set.

Just like in the four previous sets, the Jacks got the first point up on the scoreboard. Humboldt State led first with a three-point cushion at 4-1, but the Warriors turned five points on the Jacks to put the score in favor of Cal State Stanislaus. HSU found itself trailing 9-6 and battled back to regain the lead and put itself in once again in match-point position at 14-11, but saw the win slip out of the Jacks' hands as the Warriors scored five unanswered points to claim the last set 16-14.
