Lumberjacks conclude season with loss

ARCATA – Humboldt State pushed hard in the first set, but lost momentum and fell 3-0 to San Francisco State Saturday night. The Jacks played a tight first set 27-25 before dropping the second set 25-18 and the final set 25-11.

The loss concludes the season for the Jacks, who finish with an overall record of 8-18, 5-17 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. San Francisco State stands with an overall record of 15-12, and an even 11-11 in conference play.

Offensively, the Jacks could not seem to produce and only hit at a .081-percent. Oceana Matsubu led the attack with eight kills in her final collegiate match. Ashley Neale and Alexa Rosendale each added another seven kills, but the Gator defense was able to hold its own against HSU and picked up seven total blocks and 69 digs. Megan Johnson had 16 of those digs, followed closely by Sarah Kurfess.

The Gator attack proved too much for the Lumberjacks, led by Robyn Hall with 16 kills. Halimah Oswald and Johnson each posted 10 kills to help SFSU hit at a .262-percent. The best set for the Gators came in the second when they hit at .406.

HSU played the first set tight with the Gators and didn't allow them to get more than three points ahead. The Jacks had an opportunity to grab the first set win of the night with the score at 25-24, but SFSU responded with two points of its own to end the set at 27-25.

The Jacks never took the lead again in the match and found themselves trailing by nine at one point in the second. By the end of the set, HSU dropped the lead to seven, but could not get a rhythm offensively.

Set-backs continued into the third set when the Gators led by the highest point margin in the game with a 13-point lead before ultimately winning by 14. The Jacks allowed SFSU to get seven unanswered points and were not able to dig out of the hole, ending the set at 25-11 and the game in three sets.
