ARCATA — Looking to finish with a flare, Humboldt State volleyball seniors
Oceana Matsubu and
Clara Bolster will complete their collegiate careers this weekend when the Jacks host Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and San Francisco State on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
Head-to-Head
It's been awhile since the Jacks have posted a win over either of this week's opponents, and they trail both in the all-time series. The Lumberjacks' most recent and only win over Cal Poly Pomona came in 2006, and after falling to the Broncos earlier this year the Jacks trail 1-16 all-time. …HSU defeated the San Francisco State Gators in five sets during the 2008 season, but trails 18-38 in the historical series.

Head Coach Sue Woodstra
An Olympic silver-medalist as both an athlete and a coach, Sue Woodstra finishes her ninth season guiding the Lumberjacks. … Woodstra took a year and a half leave of absence from the Lumberjack program for the 2007 and beginning of the 2008 seasons. In June 2007, at the helm of the USA National Team, she coached the indoor women's volleyball team to a bronze medal at the Pan American Games. She continued serving Team USA as first assistant coach during its run to the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. …Woodstra served as captain as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic Team that earned a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.…Woodstra is the 10th head coach in the history of the volleyball program at Humboldt State.
Lumberjack Notes
Assured for some time now of an improvement over last year's record, the 8-16 overall Lumberjacks would like nothing more than to end the season on a winning note. They've dropped three straight matches, their last win a 3-2 victory over CSU Dominguez Hills on Oct. 28. …Matsubu looks to claim the CCAA individual statistics title for most kills, heading into the weekend with 345 total and and an average of 4.06 per set. She's also No. 2 in points scored with an average of 4.66. …Allison Drobish ranks No. 2 in league with 104 blocks and Brooke Ferguson is No. 3 in digs with 4.76 per set. …As a team, HSU ranks No. 2 in the CCAA with 2.51 blocks per set heading into the final weekend. …Matsubu finishes her Lumberjack career with impressive numbers, having been the Jacks' top offensive weapon since her sophomore season. She surpassed her former school record of 1,141 attempts in a season last weekend, and has 1,183 with two matches remaining in 2011. Matsubu ranks No. 4 all-time among HSU players in career attempts with 3,454. The senior's 944 kills rank ninth on the career list. …With another year yet to play, Drobish has already positioned herself at No. 5 in the Jacks' career record book with 281 blocks to date. She moved up three spots to No. 2 in a single season with 107, but would need 21 blocks this weekend to equal record-holder Danielle Wells.
Opponents' Notes
Cal Poly Pomona is tied for seventh place in the CCAA standings with Cal State Los Angeles and San Francisco State, all holding 10-10 league marks. The Broncos are 13-12 overall and have won four of their last five matches. …Taylr Kreutziger is CPP's big hitter, putting away 207 kills thus far in 2011. Karissa Lagmay leads her team with 29 service aces. …San Francisco State is 14-11 overall, and is also finishing its season on a hot streak, having won two of the last three and four of their last six matches. …Hallmah Oswald, with 267 kills, and Megan Johnson, with 235, are two weapons the Gators can go to. …Junior setter Iris Tollenada has been both impressive and consistent, ranking No. 3 in the CCAA with 934 assists for an average of 10.86 per set. …Both San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona will have five seniors playing their final matches this weekend.

On her seniors: “Clara (Bolster) has been a great teammate, and a player who supports everyone else. She's always ready to go.
