Battle comes up short for Lumberjacks

Box Score ARCATA — Despite putting up a valiant fight and grabbing the second set, Humboldt State couldn't keep the momentum and fell to Chico State 1-3 (25-17, 21-25, 26-24, 25-17) Thursday night.

With the loss, the Jacks drop to 0-12 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, 2-17 overall. The Wildcats improve to 13-6 overall, 7-5 in conference play.

Leading the attack for HSU was a joint-effort between Alexa Rosendale and Danielle Carlson, both racking up 15 kills. Rosendale also led the team defensively coming up with 16 digs, followed by Tiffany McCray with 13.

Alex Shurtz put down a match-high 18 kills for Chico State with Linday Quigley following behind with 10 kills of her own. Emily Duran and Sable Villaescusa tallied 14 and 10 digs, respectively.

McCray helped the Jacks get on the board first with a service ace, however the lead didn't last long as Chico State shortly followed with three-straight kills and a service error, bringing the score to 5-3. Attack errors became a problem for HSU as they watched CSUC's lead increase to 14-6.

After a quick timeout, it was obvious Chico wanted to get the job done. The visiting Wildcats took advantage of the court putting down six more kills and capitalizing on errors by the Jacks, winning the set 25-17.

Humboldt State played better volleyball early in the second set, keeping up with Chico State and tying the game five times before reaching a score of 9-10.  The Wildcats broke away with a three-point lead but saw it quickly close as they committed four attacking errors. Allison Drobish put a kill down to tie the score at 15-15. Rosendale followed with two more giving the Jacks the lead they were patiently waiting for.

Chico State tried to slow the game down by calling a timeout but the Jacks were ready and thirsty for a win. Back on the court, HSU powered through and grabbed the set 25-21.

It was a back-and-forth battle between Humboldt State and Chico State in the third set. The Jacks were able to maintain the lead throughout the majority of the set, but committed costly errors to give the Wildcats much needed points.

Tied at 20-20, Rosendale put a kill down, but Ellie Larronde was quick to return one for CSUC. After an attack error by Villaescusa put HSU in the lead again, Quigley responded and made up for it with a kill to tie the set at 24-24. Shurtz put down two more kills as the Jacks saw their hopes of winning a second set slip away. The Wildcats finished the job taking the set 26-24.

In the beginning of the final set Chico State went on a four-point run and could have gained another but a serving error on Duran ended the Wildcats' streak, finally putting HSU on the board.

Determined to close the gap, the Jacks got back into the game and went on a three-point run and gained another point off a bad set by Villaescusa tying the score at 9-9. The Wildcats took advantage of every mistake made by HSU and watched their lead quickly increase. CSUC took the last set 25-17, ending the match in the 'Cats favor.

HSU continues home play as they take on Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Oct. 18. Match is set for an unusual 4 p.m. start time, in Lumberjack Arena.
