Lumberjacks let match slip out of their hands

Box Score ARCATA — Humboldt State could not avoid the sweep Saturday and fell 0-3 (27-25, 27-25, 25-20) to Cal State Stanislaus. The Jacks fall to 2-18 overall and is 0-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Warriors improved to 7-14 and 4-9 in league play.

Despite the loss, HSU hit at a .345-percent in the second set, the best showing offensively by the Jacks this year. Paving the way for such an impressive percentage attack was Alexa Rosendale who finished with 12 kills, followed by Allison Drobish with eight kills. Defensively, Tiffany McCray came up with a team-high 21 digs. As a team, Humboldt State finished the night with seven blocks, three more than the visiting Warriors.

Andrea Fett led the attack for CSUS with 14 kills, while on defense Ashley Pittman finished with 17 digs.

Though the Warriors got on the board first in the opening set, the Jacks responded with six kills to grab an early 7-3 lead—all three of CSUS's points came from attacking errors on HSU. The Warriors came back from a quick timeout ready to close the gap and successfully did so, tying the score at 12-12.

Humboldt State was able to get away, yet again, bringing the score to 23-19. The Jacks received the set point off an attack error by CSUS's Jennifer Marsh, however Stanislaus was not ready to give the set up that easily. Fett came back with two kills and CSUS captured one more point off another attack error from the Jacks.

After a service ace by McCray brought the score to 24-23, Humboldt State called a timeout to slow the ending of the set down, but the Warriors came back and finished the job, capturing the set 27-25.

Trying to bounce back, Humboldt State started the second set up two points.  The Jacks were able to hold the lead until the Warriors tied the score 15-15. Later in the game, HSU surrendered much needed points as a result of multiple serving errors. Humboldt State watched CSU Stanislaus run away with the lead, but was able to catch up again to tie the set at 22-22.

Ashley Neale sent the ball down for a kill to put the Jacks in the lead, forcing Cal State Stanislaus to call a timeout. The Warriors came back on the court and added two kills trying to seal the deal. HSU tied the score one more time thanks to a kill by Rosendale. An attack error by Janay Bankston put the Jacks in the lead 25-24; however, CSUS's Marsh answered right back with a kill to tie it up again at 25-25. A bad set by McCray and a service ace from Eva Chafeh gave the Warriors the two points needed for a second set win.

Humboldt State was able to keep up with the Warriors in the beginning of the third set, tying the game multiple times before the score reached 9-9. Stanislaus capitalized on errors committed by the Jacks and propelled past the home team, keeping them at least two points behind until the end, taking the final set 25-20.

HSU heads down south next week to face two tough conference opponents. The Jacks meet UC San Diego on Friday, Oct. 26, before facing Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Oct. 27. Both matches set for 7 p.m.
