Busy week on the road for rejuvenated Jacks

ARCATA — Humboldt State finally broke through the wall that had been holding the Jacks back from their first conference victory on Saturday night as HSU defeated Cal State Monterey Bay in five sets. The Jacks will look to carry their excitement and encouragement from the win on the plane as they fly down to face three challenging California Collegiate Athletic Association teams in Southern California.

"The win definitely helped our confidence for sure," said head coach Sue Woodstra. "We finally got the monkey off our back. We needed the validation since we know we are good enough to win."

The Jacks will first face Cal Poly Pomona for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 7, before taking on Cal State Los Angeles on Friday, Nov. 9, and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, Nov. 10. All three matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.

"It's a long time to be on the road," said Woodstra. "The team has been trying to prepare to be on the road with professors and classwork. We'll have study times on the road and just try to take care of things on and off the court."

Head-to-Head
Cal Poly Pomona has dominated the all-time series, allowing the Jacks only one win in 22 matches. Humboldt State's only victory came in a three-set sweep back in 2006. Earlier this season, the Broncos took a 3-0 victory over HSU to put the all-time series at 21-1.

Cal State L.A. has also held the upper hand in the all-time series for some time now, standing 16-3 in the series after taking a three-set sweep earlier this season.

Humboldt State has kept Cal State Dominguez Hills at bay in the all-time series, holding a 17-4 all-time record over the Toros. CSUDH beat the Jacks 3-1 earlier this season to make a dent in the record.

Woodstra's Words
"We'll have to try to control the ball well and hit at the right time to get around two great blocking teams in CPP and CSULA. ... Cal State L.A. is very athletic. We have to serve well and be really steady. We also need to keep the pressure on them since they can sometimes be hot and cold. We need to be efficient in what we're doing and make them make a lot of plays. ... Cal State Dominguez Hills has had a great year. They hit a little rough patch recently, but they always seem to get up for us. I'm sure they'll be ready to battle. ... One of the great things about being on the road is that it provides more down time and more rest. We get better rest on the road, since there's less distractions, which is pretty important at this point. ... Three matches in four days, plus travel is a lot. I'm a little concerned with that, but we're just going to keep taking it match by match, set by set, point by point."
