Box Score LOS ANGELES — Humboldt State was unable to push past Cal State Los Angeles and fell 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 29-27) to the Golden Eagles in a Friday night California Collegiate Athletic Association match.
The loss dropped the Jacks to 3-23 overall, 1-18 in conference action. Cal State Los Angeles improved to 13-13 overall, 11-8 in the CCAA.
Leading the attack for HSU was
Alexa Rosendale with 12 kills, while defensively
Tiffany McCray led with 15 digs. On the other side of the net, Samantha Potter, Sukhjit Athwal and Marquis Mora each ended the night with double-digit kills with 13, 12 and 10, respectively. Kaitlynd Carrol led on defense with 12 digs.
The Jacks were unable to connect early in the first set, allowing the Golden Eagles to set the pace with a 5-1 lead. HSU closed the gap and tied the score at 11-11 on
Danielle Carlson's kill, but Alexandra Bura followed with a kill to place CSULA back in front.
Humboldt State remained at least two points behind Cal State L.A. throughout the rest of the set and watched as the Golden Eagles grabbed the 25-20 win.
An attack error by the Jacks put CSULA on the board first in the second set, but Athwal committed the same error in the following play, tying the score. As the set continued, it was a back-and-forth battle for the lead. Tied at 14-14, Rosendale put HSU ahead with a kill off a pass by
Kelci Renshaw. Cal State L.A. bounced back and later went on multiple scoring runs.
Down 23-20, Rosendale tried to close the gap for the Jacks with another kill, bringing the score to 23-21. CSULA sealed the deal with a kill and service ace to take the second set 25-21.
HSU showed more effort in the third set, tying the score five times before finally taking a 12-9 lead to force CSU Los Angeles to take a timeout. Back on the court, Samantha Potter put a kill down, and Marquis Mora followed with two service aces to put the Golden Eagles back in the lead at 16-14. CSULA went on another series of three-point runs to increase its lead to 22-16.
The Jacks closed the gap with back-to-back kills by Washington and two attack errors on Cal State L.A. bringing the score to 22-20. The Golden Eagles grabbed two more points and needed only one more point to win the third set, but couldn't finish the job as they committed three-straight errors bringing the score to 24-23. After a timeout on CSULA, Carlson tied the score up with a kill off a pass from Renshaw. HSU continued to fight to gain control of the court, but couldn't execute and watched as the Golden Eagles won the third set 29-27.
Tomorrow night the Jacks play their last road match of the season and face Cal State Dominguez Hills for their final road trip of the season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
