Jacks demolish Gladiators to end 2012 with big win

Box Score ARCATA — As Humboldt State men's basketball head coach Steve Kinder said, this time of year often produces "a great amount of attrition."  It can result from injuries, personnel problems, academics and a variety of other factors.

Tiny Pacifica University – the Lumberjacks' opponent on Wednesday –  has experienced all of the above, leaving the Gladiators with no bench and their coach unable to make the roadtrip because of another committment. So it wasn't surprising when Humboldt State finished off the Gladiators, 112-57 in the final game of 2012.

Humboldt State improved to 5-3 overall heading into its next game, a Jan. 3 match-up with California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Cal State San Bernardino in Lumberjack Arena.

"They have had a tough series of events, which puts them at a disadvantage," Kinder said about the Jacks' visitors from Southern California. "Still, I liked the way we approached the game. It's a win, and it sends us into 2013 with momentum."

Missing three players themselves, including two starters, the Lumberjacks took the opportunity to spread the success among 12 players available Wednesday. Six of them scored in double digits, led by Ethan Dillard's 18 points on 6-11 shooting from 3-point range.

Jacks' reserve Meniru Ofodu, who had played a total of nine minutes in the first seven games this season, enjoyed 21 minutes of court-time, finishing with 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field and also totaled a team-high eight rebounds.

Also experiencing a breakout night was Brett McConnell, who was on the floor for 20 minutes Wednesday, five more than he had played the rest of the season. McConnell used his time effectively, scoring 13 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

Joining the pair in double figures were Cody Kale and Austin Bryan with 13 points each, and Aaron Chamberlain, with 12. Nate Hentley dished out a team-high five assists.

Known as a team that plays up-tempo basketball and employs a swarming fullcourt press, HSU  abandoned those tactics in an effort to back off on its over-matched opponent. Still, the Lumberjacks dominated every phase of the game, out-rebounding Pacifica 54-25, and shooting 57 percent from the field to the Gladiators' 35 percent effort.

With only five players suited up, the Gladiators did a good job of keeping all of them available, committing only five fouls to the Jacks' 16. Adam Tolbert led Pacifica with 19 points, Dion Hudson scored 17, and Anthony Mangano contributed 11.

Pacifica University president William Myers accompanied the team on the trip to Arcata, serving as chaperone, bus driver and coach. The Covina-based school of only 100 students offers degrees exclusively in sports-related fields. Myers expects the 3-year-old university to double its enrollment by next fall.
