Jacks start tournament play, season with loss

Box Score ARCATA–After grabbing the first two sets, Humboldt State was unable to keep the momentum going and dropped its first match of the HSU Volleyball Tournament and season to Dominican University 2-3 (20-25, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-12).

The Jacks start the season with a 0-1 overall record, while the Penguins improve to 1-1 overall—Dominican entered the match against HSU with a tournament record of 0-1 after losing to Chico State in the tournament's second match.

Humboldt State finished the night with a total of 51 kills, 58 digs and an impressive 18 service aces. Alexa Rosendale contributed to more than half of the recorded kills, with 23, while Channel Washington and Ashley Neale tallied nine and eight, respectively. Merry Ellen Ackema finished with three total blocks, followed by Allison Drobish and Sarah Wilber, each with two. Tiffany McCray grabbed a match-high 15 digs on the night.

Hannah Stocking led the attack for the Penguins, recording 21 kills, while Jamie Lavitoria and Sari Kwan each helped to keep Dominican in the game defensively, picking up 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

In set one, HSU got on the board first but the Penguins took the lead and wouldn't relinquish it until a kill by Rosendale tied the score at 17-17. The Jacks remained ahead during the rest of the set, from a combination of kills by Rosendale and service aces by Ashley Neale, giving HSU the first set 25-20.

Humboldt State tied the score at 4-4 and pushed out in front, where the Jacks remained, finishing 11 points ahead of the Penguins with a score of 14-25.

Wilber started the third set with four service aces, giving HSU hope for a three set sweep. The Jacks remained at least one point ahead throughout the set until an attack error by Neale brought the score to 18-18. A battle began on both sides of the net before HSU surrendered the set 25-23.

Building off the momentum of its first set victory, Dominican kept the match alive, grabbing the fourth set 25-23 to push the match into a fifth deciding set. Unable to find its footing in the final set, HSU fell 15-12 to end the match, giving the Penguins a come-from-behind victory.

Hoping to rebound from the loss, the Jacks face California Baptist University at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Holy Names University at 7 p.m., both in the Lumberjack Arena.
