Defending conference champs sweep Lumberjacks

Box Score ARCATA — Humboldt State dropped its fourth-straight conference match Thursday against defending California Collegiate Athletic Association Champions Cal State San Bernardino, but not without putting up a fight. The Coyotes took the Jacks 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-17) to put the Jacks at 2-9 overall, 0-4 in the CCAA, while the Coyotes improve to 5-6 overall, 2-1 in conference.

Despite the loss, Alexa Rosendale led the attack for HSU with a match-high 13 kills and also tallied 16 digs. Ashley Neale and Allison Drobish added eight and six kills, respectively, and both registered two blocks. After an impressive match against Chico State last weekend, Kelci Renshaw ended the night with 28 assists.

On the other side of the net, Alexandra Torline and Mercedes Winchester led the Coyotes, each with 11 kills.

Humboldt State kept up with CSUSB during the beginning of the first set and even took the lead after tying the game at 10-10.  The Coyotes surrendered multiple attack errors that gave the Jacks a four-point lead and Humboldt State came close to taking the first set, but committed costly errors in the end, eventually leading to the Coyotes grabbing the first set 26-24.

Despite dropping the second set 22-25, it was Humboldt State's best showing of the match. Neale opened the set with a kill, putting the Jacks on the board first. The Jacks maintained their lead for only a short while as CSU San Bernardino caught up and passed Humboldt State with back-to-back kills from Danielle Newcombe and Torline, bringing the score to 7-6.

Down four points at 10-6, and ready to make a comeback, Humboldt State got the boost it needed off a kill from Neale and three-straight service aces from Tiffany McCray. Attack errors plagued both teams, with the set ultimately ending in favor of the Coyotes.

Cal State San Bernardino was determined to take the match into its hands and came back from the break poised to attack. Six different Coyotes put down a total of 16 kills to power through to a 25-17 finish, leading by nine points at one point in the set.

Humboldt State will have one more chance this week to grab its first conference victory in front of a home crowd as they take on UC San Diego Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Lumberjack Arena.
