Attack comes up short as Jacks fall in both matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAYWARD—After ending Friday night with a win over the host Notre Dame de Namur, Humboldt State couldn't keep the momentum going into the second day of the Route 92 Tournament and fell to Academy of Art University 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 16-25, 15-12) and Fresno Pacific 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-19).

The Jacks return home still looking to break even on the season, standing at 2-5 overall. Academy of Art sits with a similar 2-5 record, while Fresno Pacific improves to 6-2 overall.

Both Ashley Neale and Alexa Rosendale finished the first match with double-digit kills and digs. Neale posted 18 kills (for a .326 hitting percentage) and 12 digs, while Rosendale followed close behind with 15 kills and 16 digs. Tiffany McCray ended with 27 digs. Leading AAU's attack was Angela Heath with 25 kills and 17 digs.

The Jacks started set one off strong, first with a service ace by Sarah Wilber and a solo block by Channel Washington. Tied later at 19-19, a kill by Wilber put the Jacks in the lead and a service error by Heath ended the set at 25-23.

After grabbing a three-point lead in the second set, the Jacks surrendered seven straight points to the Urban Knights bringing the score to 8-12 to put AAU in the lead, which the Urban Knights never relinquished, ending the set at 25-21 to tie the match at 1-1.

Humboldt State led for most of the third set, but the Urban Knights weren't far behind. With the score tied at 21-21, a service ace by Janelle Burnett put AAU in the lead. The Urban Knights took a two-point lead after an attack error by Neale. Rosendale landed a kill in the next play brining the score to a close 22-23. However, two separate attack errors by Danielle Carlson and Neale gave AAU the needed points for the victory to put Urban Knights up 2-1.

A combination of poor services from the Urban Knights and stellar aces from the Jacks gave HSU its first four points in set four. Determined to stay in the match, HSU battled back and forth with AAU for the lead, eventually tying the score at 12-12. A kill by Rosendale and two service aces from Neale gave the Jacks the much-needed boost. Humboldt State powered through the remaining of set and finished at 25-16, sending both teams into a fifth set.

Although the Jacks got on the board first in the final set, the Urban Knights answered right back with four straight kills by Holli Kaina. Down 1-5, Humboldt State took a timeout to regroup and went on a three-point run after returning to the court. However the Urban Knights proved to be too much for the Jacks as HSU was not able to get out in front and dropped the final match 15-12.

In HSU's final tournament match of the day, Fresno Pacific University proved to be too much for HSU as the Jacks dropped in three sets to the Sunbirds.

Both Washington and Rosendale registered seven digs for HSU, while Neale came close with six. McCray, Rosendale and Wilber posted double-digit digs, with 18, 12 and 11 respectively. Wilber also tallied 22 assists and posted a .222 attack percentage.

On the other side of the net, Jessie Alcorn had 10 kills to lead the Sunbirds' attack, while Hannah Butler ended with 27 digs on defense.

In opening set, FPU limited HSU to seven kills. An attack error by Kathleen Anderson placed HSU on the board first, but the Jacks fell behind as attack errors from Rosendale and Neale put FPU ahead. Tied at 4-4, Rosendale and Washington each put down a kill to give the Jacks a much-needed boost. The lead didn't last long though, as FPU took over to grab the first set.

Humboldt State fell behind early in the second set after the score was tied at 2-2, when FPU showed no mercy and went on an eight-point spree. The Jacks bounced back and brought closed a 13-6 gap to 13-11 thanks to kills by Neal, Rosendale and Wilber. Humboldt State tried to catch up but came up short as the set ended at 25-20.

The Jacks tied the score four times throughout the third set, but were unable to pass the Sunbirds. Errors plagued the HSU as Fresno Pacific jumped six points ahead, bringing the score to 23-17 and ultimately ended the set 25-19 for the 3-0 victory.
