Hammond rallies Jacks, but fall one short to Seawolves

Riki Michael (19) netted HSU's 1st Sunday goal
Box Score ARCATA – As with any collegiate playing career, an athlete never wants it to end.  Over the final 12 minutes of Sunday's season finale, Humboldt State senior Zach Hammond rallied his squad, but fell one short against Sonoma State.

Trailing 3-0, Hammond's hard shot was blocked by the visiting goaltender only to have Riki Michael on the doorstep to put the first Lumberjacks' score on the board at 79:50.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association's leading scorer, Hammond helped maintain the surge.

On a pass from Chuck Pitt from the right corner to the front of the goal, Hammond netted his 14th goal of the year into the right side of the net to make it a 3-2 contest with 6:36 remaining.

A Michael header was the lone home shot able to be taken in the final six-minute frenzy to no avail as Sonoma State (10-4-4/9-4-3 CCAA North) claimed the 3-2 victory.

HSU was able to battle back into the contest and never give up due to a 10-4 advantage in second half shots compared to a 12-3 Sonoma State margin in the first 45 minutes of play.

Along with Hammond, HSU (6-11-1/4-11-1 CCAA North) saw three others – back Peter Darquea, midfielder Dan Mariani and goalie Ryan Ades - wear Jacks jerseys for the last time.

Ades recorded four saves in the match.

Pitts assisted on both HSU goals.

The Seawolves had their way in the first half where Aaron Glover started the scoring by himself.  At 15:43, Glover took the ball from the left corner, went around one HSU defender and sent the ball low from 20 yards into the net.

Zanin Mahic and Raspreet Sandhu added Sonoma State scores at 25:59 and 41:35 for the 3-0 tally.
